If there is one thing we all know about Phillip “Trey” Dawson it is he can sling the ball around the yard. Since his freshman season when he jumped onto the varsity scene throwing for 2,305 yards with 14 touchdowns in 10 games followed by another fantastic 10-game season spraying 233 completions around the yard for 3,272 yards with 31 scores posted, the Class of 2020 prospect is getting the rock out to playmakers. The 2019 season for Kent High School has their 6-5, 220-pound, gunslinger back in the pocket doing what he does best, moving the chains down the field by picking apart defenses.

In an RNG exclusive interview, I got a few minutes with the three-star recruit out of Connecticut covering ground on his aerial assault and growing recruiting process.

Interview

Phillip, how has the 2019 season started out for you personally?

“So far, it has gone well. I have been making a lot of adjustments compared to last year. I am making better decisions on the field. I am happy with my play this season.”

Which areas of your game did you work on over the offseason to prepare for your senior year?

“I worked on my form and technique, decision making, and overall quickness.”

Did you attend any college camps over the summer?

“Yes. I did. I went to a lot. I went to Pitt, Rutgers, Yale, Cornell, Brown, Lafayette, and Central Connecticut State.”

After all the camps attended, what did you learn from the college coaches that is helping you this season?

“At Cornell, I learned about keeping an even base on longer throws, more on the intermediate throws. I was over-striding. I learned about keeping sound and settling in.”

Three games into the 2019 schedule, where are you seeing the biggest overall improvements?

“The improvement I am seeing are with my post-snap decision making compared to last season. I am also carrying on broken down plays and making something happen. I am more comfortable than last year.”

What style of offense are you guys running?

“We start off in a ground and pound, then we spread it out. We hit it over the top or throw the short-quick stuff.

How does the scheme fit what you do well as a quarterback?

“My delivery was big; I have shortened that up. With a shortened release, that helps with the quick game. My receivers are open as fast as my release. The offense also shows my strong arm over the top.”

The team travels to Lawrenceville (NJ) for another big game on Saturday. What kind of in-game matchup are you looking at against the Big Red (1-3)?

“I am looking forward to hitting my receivers and finding the best matchups. I am looking forward to watching my running back take over.”

By the time the season is finished, what goals do you want to have accomplished?

“I want to come out over .500 as a team. I want to win as many games as we can. I want to execute the small things and practice well so we can win games. I want to be as efficient and as successful as possible for the rest of the season.”

I like it. Closing with recruiting. Which schools are showing interest?

“The schools that are showing interest are Cornell, Brown, Pitt, Rutgers, and Lehigh.”

Which schools have offered?

“I have offers from Howard and Massachusetts.”

Do you have any planned visits coming up?

“In November I have the first one scheduled on the 18th to Pitt.”

That’ll be fun. Trey, thanks for your time today and I hope you and the team achieve the goals set going forward.

“Thank you.”
