There are only maybe a handful of Class of 2020 California quarterbacks, if that, who have had the amount of success on the field winning games as DJ Ralph, especially when connecting the wins to high-profile opponents. Ralph completed 53 passes for 1,194 yards with 15 touchdowns throwing just one pick a year ago leading his squad to a CIF San Diego championship and onto state with a 12-2 record. The 6-3, 200-pound, southpaw is crafting his trade again in 2019 having connected on 56-of-95 passes for 988 yards with seven touchdowns and has yet to throw a pick helping his team to a 7-1 record with a No. 35 national ranking (MaxPreps). As the season goes along, Ralph is showing more of his dual-threat talents. Having rushed for two scores in 2018, he has toted the rock 42 times for 196 yards with nine trips into the end zone this year.

In an RNG catch-up interview, I sat down with one of California’s more overlooked talents in the pocket for a look at his senior year to date.

Interview

DJ, the Dons were a fantastic team in 2018 and have kept that momentum going this season with a 7-1 record ranked No. 35 nationally. There is a lot of pressure that comes with that for you and the team. How are you leading the team keeping everyone focused?

“Me and the seniors are making sure we take it day by day. We are leaving it all out on the field, not taking our opportunities for granted, and playing together.”

The offense has been prolific, especially considering some of the teams you have played. What is clicking for you guys to put up an average of 41 on Friday nights?

“Our offensive line, they have a lot of experience and they play well together. We are executing well. We do not get rattled. We don’t get worried on second or third and long.”

How are you preparing for each game this season?

“Lots of film; our coaches preach that. I do a lot of visualization exercises to prepare. Having a great week of practice is what is most important to be ready for that call on Friday night.”

Of the games played this year, which has been your best personal performance?

“So far this season, my best was against Centennial (won 44-41). I had three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns.”

What are you doing differently in a positive way this year that is making an impact on the field?

“I am taking preparation more seriously, I am taking better care of my body, watching more film, and doing my visualization exercises. That has prepared me well, the rest takes care of itself.”

Is there anything with your technique or mode of play you are doing differently

“My pocket presence has improved. I am escaping more and extend plays. I have had success with that this year.”

Against other 2020 quarterbacks, what do you feel separates you from those in your peer group?

“Something I take pride in is not being rattled and how I play best in the big games. I know I am a really solid leader for my team. I can keep our team motivated no matter the situation of the game.”

With recruiting, you have the offer from New Mexico, which other schools are showing interest?

“Wyoming, San Jose State, San Diego State, Utah, and Montana.”

Are you visiting any schools this fall?

“During our bye week I am going to New Mexico or Montana. I haven’t figured it out yet where I am going. I plan on visiting Wyoming and possibly Utah as well.”

That’ll be fun. Last question. The Holy Bowl/St. Augustine game is always a big one for the Dons and the city of San Diego. What are you expecting to see from the Saints (6-1) defense on Friday?

“The Saints have a physical defense, bring a lot of pressure, and they have a lot of returners back. It will be a great game. I am looking forward to it.”

DJ, always a pleasure catching up. I wish you and the team success until we talk again.

“Thank you.”
