Watch out South Carolina high school offenses, there is a corner/defensive back on the rise in Christian Miller. The Class of 2020 defender took on 4A competition during his sophomore year coming up with 45 tackles, three interceptions, and broke up nine passes. The Hilton Head High School standout is starting to draw top college programs to the Seahawks’ yard. So far, South Florida, Tabor, and Hamline have offered the 5-11, 169-pound, defender with big programs like Duke, Florida, Wake Forest, South Carolina, and Mississippi State, among others, putting Miller up on their board.

In a Recruiting News Guru stylized Q&A interview, I sat down with the 2017 All-Region honoree to learn more about his game, college camp circuit, and growing recruiting process.

Interview

Christian, you got a ton of experience during your sophomore year at corner, how did your overall game improve last season as a defender?

“My game improved by watching the game closely, and watching film on receivers. I practiced a lot and kept working hard.”

Was there a weakness to your game at the start of the year but by the end of the year, due to your hard work, it became a strength?

“Yes, sir; tracking deep balls. As the season went along, I improved on tracking deep balls. Before my transfer; we did not go against great competition. I got better last season.”

It looks like the Seahawks run some man and off-man coverages, which schemes do you guys run in the secondary?

“We run man, some cover 2 – press then ball. We do a lot of zone as well.”

Which is your favorite scheme?

“I like Cover 1. I like man and pressing receivers. I like letting you know that I am there.”

What have you been working on this offseason?

“I have been working on my hand-eye coordination, my hands, and my speed. I’ve been working on moving my hips more.”

Where all will you line up in 2018?

“I will play corner, and I might play some safety and receiver too.”

Are you excited about playing receiver this year?

“Yes, sir.”

Have you been to any college camps this offseason?

“Yes, sir. I’ve been to a handful: Penn State, Louisville, Kentucky, Duke, Marshall, Ohio State, South Carolina and West Virginia.”

Wow. That is a lot. Which camp did you turn in your best performance?

“I feel I did my best at the Ohio State and West Virginia camps.”

What did you do well at those camps that made them your best?

“I showed a lot of aggression. I covered well and did well in all the drills.”

You have the three offers, which other schools are showing recruiting interest?

“Mississippi State, Georgia State, Wake Forest, Kentucky, South Carolina, Duke, Florida, and UNC-Charlotte.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?

“Yes, sir. I have visited Georgia Southern, Cincinnati, South Florida, and Tennessee.”

How did the South Florida visit go?

“It went well. The coaches offered two of my teammates. When I got there, they loved me. It went well. That is when they offered me.”

That would certainly count as a great visit. What about Tennessee, how did that visit go?

“It was a good visit. We are talking about setting up another visit.”

Nice. Do you have any planned visits upcoming?

“Yes, sir. I am planning to visit Duke for a game, Georgia State, and maybe Wake Forest.”

Back to football. How have the Seahawks looked during spring and summer practices?

“I think we look very good. My teammates are improving, so am I. We have a lot of players coming back with experience. We are getting into the swing of things. It is great.”

What personal goals have you set for yourself for the upcoming season?

“Funny you say, I set my goals and hang them on my wall. My goals are five picks, two pick-sixes, better decision making, and helping my team win.”

Is there at least one game you already have circled on the schedule?

(Laughs) “Yes, sir. I have two, our rival Bluffton, I had a bad game against them last year, I am ready to redeem myself, and against Beaufort. I have a lot of friends over there. Before the season, there is always a little bit of trash talking going on between us.”

Christian, I appreciate your time today. Good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
