Rolling with it on the fly has been working for three-star Class of 2021 receiver Javien Clemmer. During the 2019 season, an injury to the starting quarterback changed the scope of the offense for Camden Fairview, but that did not stop Clemmer from adapting to the adversity presented. He was targeted for 19 passes covering 368 yards converting six of those opportunities into touchdowns. The 6-0, 165-pound, athlete was needed on defense in a couple of games – no problem. Clemmer added seven tackles and four pass breakups to the resume.

Keeping with the changes, over the offseason Clemmer moved from Arkansas to Texas enrolling at Cedar Hill High School. His senior year will present another round of adaptive maneuvers learning a new offense while moving from 5A Arkansas competition to Texas 6A. The move will give Clemmer another opportunity to showcase his skills on the recruiting trail to a different set of college scouts promising to add to his scholarship tally.

In an RNG first-look, Clemmer sat down for an in-depth interview covering his junior campaign, transfer, and recruiting process.

Interview

Javien, how did the 2019 season go for you on the field?

“It did not go as planned. Our starting QB tore his ACL in spring game. Our backup was getting adjusted early in the season, it was a pretty good season.”

What offensive set were you guys executing?

“The Spread. The older QB was used to short routes, we like to throw it deep; he was not used to our speed.”

Which routes were you running last season?

“Last year I was running mostly screens, tunnel screens, deep posts, digs, slants and ran comebacks a few times.”

Where did you show improvement in your skills as a receiver in 2019?

“I became more aggressive. Everyone out there is big, no longer small. You have to be aggressive and tough. You have to be faster; I was running past people.”

Over the offseason you transferred schools landing at Cedar Hill. When did you move?

“I just transferred before spring break, in early March.”

All of this kind of landed at an odd time for you, but of what you know of the new offense, what kind of scheme will you guys execute this season?

“I think it will be a Spread. They have a QB who can throw it.”

Do you know the roles you will take on this year?

“Most likely I will be at receiver. When I went up there in the process of my transfer, I saw all that is going on with their program. Most of the coaches were talking to me about playing either side of the ball. They told me I had to choose; I will play any position on the field, wherever they need me to go.”

This offseason, what have you been working on with your game?

“I’ve been working on getting off the press, my releases, and being more physical. I’ve been working on everything – getting bigger, stronger and faster.”

The speed at your position is a difference maker, what is the fastest timed run you’ve posted?

“My fastest 40 is a 4.6. My fastest 100 was a 10.9.”

Nice. With the limitations on getting together for a team workout, what have you been doing with your daily routine to stay sharp?

“We have a weight bench in the backyard. I have been lifting doing arms one day, legs the next day and then switching it up. I am also doing drill work, ladders, running routes, and working on my quickness. I’ve been doing a lot of lifting.”

Assuming all goes to plan this summer, are there any college camps you may attend?

“The last few years in a row I have been to Arkansas’s camp, I will go back there again. I have some summer visits at ULL (Louisiana), Arkansas State, and Navy planned if all goes as it is supposed to.”

Keeping with that, which schools are showing interest?

“ULL, I text and talk to their receivers’ coach. I am texting with an Arkansas State’s coach and I have a good relationship with Arkansas’ receivers’ coach. Louisiana Tech is showing interest too.”

Which offers are you holding?

“Army, Navy, New Mexico State, Southern Miss, and William & Mary.”

Did you visit any schools over the last few months?

“Arkansas.”

Tell me about the trip to Fayetteville.

“It went well. I talked to receivers’ coach a lot. Their DB coaches were talking to me too.”

We know you play baseball and have a time in track, which sports in total are you playing?

“Football, basketball and track.”

Which events in track are you running?

“The 100, long jump, triple and high jump, the 4×8 relay, 4×4 relay, and the 400.”

Wow. That is impressive. In the classroom, what is your cumulative GPA?

“3.66.”

Do you have a score on the ACT and/or SAT yet?

“I scored a 19 on the ACT.”

Time for my virus buster question. What have you been doing for fun to balance out your free time?

“Drawing, listening to a lot of music, and playing games.”

What style of drawings?

“I doodle and I did a self-portrait. I had never done one of those.”

Javien, thanks for your time today and keep up the hard work this spring on your own.

“Thank you.”

Thanks for the great interview with Javien Clemmer. He is a fine young man with a very bright future, great attitude and multi-talented. The fact that he’s my nephew doesn’t skew the facts.
I’m looking forward to future for Javien. I know it will be so bright that I may have to buy a new pair of shades.
