One of the amazing aspects to football, as a true fan, is all the action going on play after play across the field. The orchestrated chess match of attack and defend has a lot of beauty within, especially when watching skilled players execute the game plan. In what has been a rough season for Westlake High School, one of the bright spots for the Warriors defense has been rising corner/safety Dylan Flowers. Flowers (5-11, 165) is that shadow on a receiver’s hip who does not care about giving personal space. Each week, as Flowers is taking on a top receiver, one can see the hard work and effort put into his game with his technique and flow in the backpedal and in-and-out of his breaks. The result of his work has been three-star recruiting status and offers from Brigham Young and Tennessee.

In an RNG exclusive interview, I sat down with one of California’s rising talents in the 2021 secondary going in-depth on his skills with an overview on his recruitment.

Interview

Dylan, you are so much fun to watch covering receivers from your corner spot. What type of coverages are you guys running this season at Westlake?

“We run a lot of press man and Cover 2. When I am at safety, we are doing a lot of Cover 3, I cover the middle of the field.

Your speed is such a big part of what makes you tough to go against. What is the fastest 40-yard dash you’ve posted?

“I haven’t posted an official 40 that was laser timed like at The Opening.”

What are some of the techniques you like to use in man-on-man situations?

“Trail is one of my favorites. I like the quick jab and release, not letting them inside, and the shuffle technique. I like shuffle; I can read quarterback easier and stay with the receiver in the shuffle. It helps to not bite on anything short.”

You’ve taken on a lot of top California receivers this season. Of them all, which ones have been a challenge?

“Rancho’s (Cucamonga) No. 3 (Jayden Dixon-Veal) and No. 5 (Silas Bolden).”

How did you overcome the challenges guarding Rancho’s talented receivers?

“Every week in California you play receivers who are different with different abilities. With each of them, you have to be patient and trust your technique. If you miss with your hands they are gone. You have to stay inside on the. If you let them inside, they are gone.”

Which game has been your best this season?

“The St. Francis game was my best. I had a pick on the goal line, a game-winning pick. I had five pass breakups and I shutdown their best receiver. I had a lot of good tackles in that game. Teams shied away from me during the first four games; that was a lot of fun getting work my way in that game.”

Where are you showing the biggest improvements in your game on the field during your junior year?

“Playing the ball more is one of my biggest improvements. The little stuff with my technique and my tackling – all of that has improved tremendously. I am being a better leader this season. I am teaching the younger guys around me what to do.”

Nice. Which schools have offered you so far?

“BYU and Tennessee.”

Other than those two schools, which programs are showing interest?

“Cal, Washington State, Oregon State, USC, Utah, Washington, and Nevada are all showing interest.”

From the offseason to now, have you taken any unofficial visits?

“Yes. I went to Tennessee over the summer and I visited a couple other schools with my 7v7 team.”

If you will, tell me about the Tennessee visit?

“It was great. I loved it. It was beautiful there.”

Are there any planned visits ahead?

“I am in contact with Oregon State and Cal for a game visit this season.”

Last question. The Warriors have two regular season games left. In those final two games, what do you want to accomplish?

“I want to work on my position technique more. I want to work on turning my head to the ball to track interceptions. I want to improve with my team.”

Dylan, it was great getting time in with you today. I appreciate it and wish you and the Warriors success the rest of the way.

“Thank you.”
