Class of 2021 cornerback Robert Regan Jr. was baptized by fire during the 2018 season coming out the other side a changed man. Be it on the practice field or in Trinity League games, the 6-0, 170-pound, defender was constantly put to the test against top national recruiting talent rising to the occasion each time along the way. The rising Orange Lutheran star turned in a 42-tackle, one-tackle for a loss, one-pick, and nine-pass breakup season a year ago. But don’t expect the same kind of stats from his junior season, opposing teams no better than to test the three-star recruit.

The Lancers (2-1) are just three games into the new season, but have already squared off against San Juan Hills, No. 20 nationally ranked Centennial, and Edison High School. With teams going the other way, Regan (6-0, 170) has tallied just five tackles and five passes broken up. But in his toughest test so far of the season, he held four-star Class of 2020 Centennial receiver Gary Bryant to one reception. The skills on display by Regan has college coaching staffs excited, 10 of them so far with more checking in as the season goes along.

In an RNG catch-up talk, Regan and I cover the growth to his game on the field with an update on his recruiting offers and opportunities.

Interview

Robert, last time we spoke you were in the middle of your summer workouts preparing for the 2019 season. How did those workouts and fall camp go for you?

“They went well. The workouts helped me prepare for the season. I can see a lot of improvement, especially with my footwork.”

The Lancers are three games into the season, where are you seeing the improvements in your game already beyond your footwork?

“I see improvement in my explosiveness, my cover skills have gotten way better, and my confidence has grown.”

How are offenses trying to attack you, if they do?

“Last week against Edison, they tested me deep but it did not work. Against Centennial (Corona), I covered (4-star receiver) Gary Bryant. They only threw to him three times. In our first game, they only tested me deep once.”

What types of coverages are you running?

“We are mostly in a zone – Cover 4 and Cover 3. Our other corner is young. We are working on man coverage with him. He is really coming along.”

Which game so far has been your best and why do you consider that game to be your best?

“I would say the Centennial game. I held Gary Bryant to only one catch.”

Did you showcase the skills at any college camps this summer?

“Yes. I went to Wisconsin, Utah, and Arizona.”

Of the three, which was your best camp performance?

“Utah.”

Overall, what did you learn at the camps that will help you going forward?

“At the Utah camp, their defensive backs coach, Coach (Morgan) Scalley (DC) helped me with different techniques. At all of the camps I learned new techniques. Each coach teaches differently with different techniques. I like learning the different styles and seeing which I feel most comfortable with.”

Makes sense. Going into recruiting. Which schools are showing recruiting interest but have not offered yet?

“Washington State – they are showing a lot, UCLA, and USC are showing interest.”

How many offers do you have now?

“I have 10 offers.”

Regan’s Offer Sheet: Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Florida, Kansas, LSU, Oregon, Utah, and Utah State

Separate from the camps, did you visit any campuses over the offseason?

“Yes. I visited Arizona and Wisconsin after the camps, and Notre Dame.”

Tell me how the Notre Dame visit went.

“It went well. I liked the campus. They have a lot of old fashion brick buildings, they have a religious setting, and they talked a lot about academics. It went well.”

And the Arizona, trip? How did that go?

“It was nice. It was really hot. I watched a practice. I liked it. They have a hyped/fast-tempo practice.”

Last question for you. You guys get a very talented Narbonne team on the road next time out. What kind of game are you personally expecting from the Gauchos?

“Defensively, I think we will do well. We have to shut down their skill guys. The offense is young, but they will play well against Narbonne.”

Robert, it was great catching up with you today. Good luck with everything until we talk again.

“Thank you.”
