As a college football recruiter, what’s not to like about Class of 2021 receiver Cameron Wright. Wright has it all, size (6-4, 200), speed, strength, hands, and he loves to block. All those skills and abilities were showcased during the 2019 season with South Panola High School seeing the three-star recruit tear up 6A Mississippi defenses for 600 yards off 39 receptions with 10 touchdowns posted. The All-County performer holds eight offers with interest picking back up after he de-committed from Ole Miss when the former staff was dismissed. The race is on for college programs needing a big, physical, and talented receiver like Wright in their 2021 class.

In an RNG exclusive interview, Wright went into the RNG Lab for an in-depth interview covering ground on his junior campaign and recruiting prospects.

Interview

Cameron, given your size, hands, and athleticism, am I wrong to guess that every time you saw single coverage without a safety over the top you couldn’t get the play snapped fast enough?

(Laughs) “Yes, sir, yes, sir. If they play me man, they usually switch and get back in a Cover 2. Before they do that, I want to get everyone to line up as fast as possible.”

There were times going across the middle where a crowd of three gathered around you. Throughout the season when you were double-covered, how did you work through that adversity to keep being productive?

“For me, being in double-coverage it got the other receivers open. I want the ball, but I want to win. We would also take a safety out because of the run game; our running back (Janari Dean – Mississippi State) was a four-star. I don’t care about double coverage, it doesn’t bother me.”

Your skills as a receiver are more than a 50-50 guy or a fade in the corner of the end zone. What were some of the routes you were running during the 2019 season?

“Digs, hitches, comebacks, posts, and slants.”

How did your overall game improve last season as a receiver?

“I got faster and bigger. My hands got stronger too. During my sophomore year, I was not releasing as well. I got more flexible over the offseason and I am way more physical than what I used to be. And I love the block.”

What are you working on with your game this offseason?

“I am trying to get my 40 down to 4.5 flat. I also want to get up to 205. I am working on breaking down my routes quicker and staying low.”

Are you taking on any new roles during your senior season?

“My coach has been saying he will put me at safety, but I am not sure. With no spring ball, I’m not sure what will happen. I know I will line up at inside receiver a lot too.”

Is there a personal goal you want to accomplish this spring and/or summer?

“I want to get three plates on bench and a 4.5 flat in the 40.”

Before everything was shut down, did you compete at any camps?

“I went to a Rivals camp in New Orleans.”

How did that camp go for you?

“It went well. We did a lot of one-on-ones, and I won a lot of them. I liked the competition.”

Once things get back to normal so to speak, are there any camps you may go to this spring or summer?

“The Under Armour All-American Camp. That was scheduled for the 15th, but it has been postponed. I might go to the Memphis Mega Camp. I want to camp at LSU, Florida, and Georgia this summer.”

Going into recruiting. How many offers do you have?

“Eight.”

Wright’s Offer Sheet: Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe, Memphis, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, and Texas State

Which schools are showing interest?

“Georgia, South Carolina, Missouri, Louisville, Florida State, Florida, and Kentucky.”

Did you take any visits over the past few months?

“Yes, sir. I went to Ole Miss a lot before I de-committed. I went to all their home games. Ole Miss is about 15 minutes from my house. I went on Jan 25th to visit with the new staff. I also went to Memphis in early February.”

Are you taking any visits in the coming weeks or months?

“Kentucky, for a fact Georgia, Florida State, Louisville, and Florida.”

Cameron, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your workouts.

“Thank you.”
