During the Cubs 10-3 run in 2019, there were not a lot of targets left for underclassmen with five seniors being fed the rock, but Class of 2021 receiver Cameron “Cam” Richardson forged a path forward. The 6-3, 200-pound, talent hauled in 10 passes for 136 yards with one score. With the seniors graduated, Richardson’s role within the offense has predictably expanded and he is responding. In three games played with Brenham High School (1-2) this season, the three-star recruit has secured 12 passes for 216 yards with three trips into the end zone against bracketed 5A Texas secondaries. As his star rises, so does his recruiting opportunities. The two-sport athlete (basketball) carrying a 2.9 grade point average is starting to pop up on top college football boards throughout the region.

In an RNG first-look, Richardson breaks down how he prepared for his senior season and the role he is taking on as a No. 1 receiver.

Interview

Cam, you have started off hot this season leading the Cubs in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. What’s working for you allowing for the big production early in the season?

I have to give it to the offensive line. They are blocking and I have great chemistry with my quarterback. We are getting it going.

What offensive set are the Cubs running?

We run a Spread.

A lot of outside receivers do not like to go across the middle, but you show that “no fear” mentality on the field. What routes are you running this season?

I am basically running everything, comebacks, posts, hitches, slants – everything really.

How have teams tried to cover you over the first three?

I have seen Cover 3 and Cover 0, that is it.

You laid down the foundation as a junior for what you are doing now. To build upon that foundation, what did you work on over the spring and summer months with your game?

During the offseason I worked on my speed, that was a big factor, my routes, and my hands.

What were some of the workouts you were doing to add speed and increase your agility?

Working with a speed coach, Coach Taylor, he really helped me out. We worked a lot on my explosion. On Monday, Tuesday, and Friday I was working on speed and agility.

Cam, sticking with that, you are not just big but you are also fast. What is the best-timed run you’ve posted?

At school a 4.5 and 4.59.

Did you do any catching specific drills with your workouts?

I use tennis balls a lot. After each workout, I worked on my hands with concentration drills.

You guys get East View on Friday, what kind of game are you expecting from their defense?

We are expecting a disciplined defense. I am expecting double-teams off the bat.

What are some of the other big games left on the schedule?

Pflugerville Connally (Austin), we play them there. That will be a big game.

For the 2020 season, what goals have you set for yourself?

Ever since my junior year, I have used my stats as motivation to be better than last year.

Let’s end on recruiting. Which schools are showing interest?

Howard Payne, I am going there this Saturday for their scrimmage, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Louisiana Tech.

Have you had a chance to take any unofficial visits?

Yes. I went to (Texas) A&M with Fast Houston (7v7) right before spring break.

How did that visit go?

It went very well. They showed a lot of love. It was a great visit.

Cam, I appreciate your time today and wish you and the Cubs success the rest of the way.

Thank you.
