With “Super Seniors” granted an extra year of NCAA eligibility and all college players given a pass on 2020 with another year to play ball, college football’s recruiting process is off kilter, especially with a wide-open transfer portal. If a high school prospect has a chance to prove why a college program should put an offer down on him with limited scholarships available, best that player take advantage of the live in-person reps. With offers from Kansas and Middle Tennessee, three-star 2022 Vilonia quarterback Austin Myers is hitting the college camp circuit showcasing his skills when he can. So far the Arkansas standout has worked out for coaches at Memphis and Colorado with trips ahead to South Alabama, Arkansas, Arkansas State and Middle Tennessee.

For an update on his first two workouts, Myers gives us the inside scoop from Denver International Airport.

Interview

Austin, your summer along the recruiting trail is heating up. Where all have you been so far?

Memphis and Colorado.

With the Memphis visit, what all did you do?

I started out with an hour workout; you can’t go over an hour per NCAA rules. During my visit, they took me around the facilities. During my workout, I worked out with Coach (Kevin) Johns (OC/QB). Head coach (Ryan) Silverfield was there watching. It was a fun experience.

During the workout, what drills and throws did they have you do?

A lot of agility drills. I was throwing into a net. They can’t have anyone catch for me. I did different throws, some tough ones, but I enjoyed that. I got to see what I could do. He put me through some challenging throws.

How do feel that you threw?

I think I did really well. Since the visit was set up, I have been preparing. I threw the best I could throw and I laid it all out there.

When it got down to talking recruiting with Memphis, where was everything left?

They are bringing in two more guys and looking at them. They said that they’ll get back with me in about 14 days. With the transfer portal, it makes it more difficult to give me any immediate response.

At Colorado, how was that visit constructed?

About the same, but with no agility drills. They had me throwing to routes for about 30 minutes. We did about an hour-and-a-half tour of the facilities.

Throwing for the coaches at Colorado, what did they have you do?

It was different than at Memphis. They had me alternating between under center and shotgun. He was telling me the drops. A player personnel person was catching for me. At Colorado I was not throwing into a net. They had me throwing posts, goes, corners, and bang-8s. That was how that was different.

How do you feel about performance at Colorado?

I did really well. Again, I have been preparing for a while. I did as well at Colorado as I did at Memphis. I put it all out there with nothing else to show. During both workouts, I performed well. At Colorado I threw 60-yards downfield with tight spirals.

What did you think about the facilities at both schools?

Both places have really nice facilities. Memphis updated their facilities last year, Colorado did theirs in the last couple of years. Both were amazing. I was blown away by both places. You can see it in pictures, but being there in person, it is different seeing it in person. It was awesome.

What feedback did you receive from the coaches at both programs in regards to your arm talent and abilities?

They told me they were impressed after the workouts and they told me that they will keep recruiting me. They are both very interested in me. It is a weird time with Covid and players receiving extra years. The Colorado coaches told me they don’t know the scholarship spot they are in right now with all that is going on.

Where are your next stops?

I am going to South Alabama this weekend to workout with Coach (Major) Applewhite. After that, then I am going to Arkansas, Arkansas State, and then to Middle Tennessee when I can. I have no date set up for the Middle Tennessee visit yet.

Austin, thanks for updating us today. Good luck with the rest of the visits and workouts.

Thank you, sir.
