In California, it is hard to find a better cover corner than Class of 2021 talent Ceyair Wright. The 6-1.5, 175-pound, standout has been getting after it with Los Angeles’ Loyola High School working his way to four-star recruiting status. During his junior season, Wright laid it on Mission League competition coming up with 52 tackles, 21 solo, three interceptions, seven passes broken up, and one forced fumble. He began expanding his “athlete” role on offense with 10 receptions for 89 yards and on special teams with 11 punts taken back for 125 yards and 10 kicks going the other way for 155 more all-purpose yards.

As his role expands even more on offense during his senior season, a top schools list potentially coming out soon with 38 offers in-hand, Wright took a break from his offseason grind to update us on his workouts and narrowing recruiting process.

Interview

Ceyair, how have the offseason workouts been going for you?

Pretty good. Everything has been good so far.

A big focus for on the field after your junior season was at corner. What have you been working on with your DB skills this summer and fall?

A lot of off coverages. I am strong on press; I’ve been working on my off coverages.

What coverages will Loyola run this season?

Every coverage.

You were able to further showcase your speed on special teams and on offense as a receiver in 2019. What have you been doing to increase your burst and breakaway speed?

I’ve been doing explosive work working on my quick twitch muscles to add more burst to my abilities.

Where all are you lining up on the field in 2020?

I am playing more receiver this year than last year, defense and special teams as well.

On defense, are they moving you around in the secondary or are you staying at corner?

I’ll be playing corner.

With the increased workload on offense, what have you been doing to prepare for that role?

I have been working on my route running. I’ve always had pretty good hands and good releases. Working on my route running has been my main focus.

You started the dual-role last season and have worked more at it this offseason. How is playing receiver helping you as a corner and vice-versa?

It helps me as a receiver because I know what the DB is trying to do. I know his goals, and I keep that in mind as a receiver. As a corner, it is the same thing. Playing receiver, I have been able to learn the little tricks and I’m keeping that in the back of my head when I am playing to counteract it.

Let’s cover some ground on recruiting. How many offers do you have now?

I have 38.

Which schools have been the most recent to offer?

Morgan State, Jackson State, and Langston University.

Wright’s Offer Sheet: Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Boise State, Boston College, BYU, California, Duke, FAU, Florida State, Illinois, Jackson State, Kansas, Langston University, Maryland, Michigan, Morgan State, Nebraska, Nevada, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, San Diego State, San Jose State, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, USC, Utah, Washington State, and Yale

Are there any schools showing interest or have they all offered already?

There are a couple. Memphis has been a little bit.

Have you taken any virtual visits?

I haven’t recently, but over the summer I did. Over the summer I took virtual visits with Syracuse, Oregon, and Cal.

The plan is for the NCAA to start allowing visits against in 2021. When that happens, do you have any programs you’d like to visits?

I am going to a Michigan game soon. I’d like to visit Oregon, Nebraska, and Utah as well.

With 2020 being an odd year in more ways than one, what has this recruiting process been like for you not being able to take official and unofficial visits?

It has been crazy. It is a lot different than prior years because of the virus but it has not been too bad.

Are you going to release a top schools list?

Yes. I will do it soon, but I don’t have a date.

Do you have a commitment date in mind?

Yes, Jan. 2. It was supposed to be at an All-American Game, but they are not playing the game. It will be something else now.

The school/program you commit to, what will does that ideal fit look like to you?

It is a place that will develop me as a person and a player, and allow me to be successful once football is over.

Ceyair, it was great catching up with you today. I appreciate your time. Good luck with your offseason workouts until we talk again.

Thank you.
