Menlo-Atherton High School was one of those teams no other California squad wanted to face during the 2018 season. The Bears ran their record to 13-2 capturing a CIF title and pushed through to state bringing home another trophy with a 21-7 win over Lincoln (San Diego). One of the big reasons for the Bears’ success was the play of their four-star Class of 2021 receiver/athlete Troy Franklin. Franklin (6-2, 170) hauled in 25 passes for 531 yards with 12 trips into the end zone and rushed for 236 yards off 13 carries with four more scores going up on the board. He even chipped in on defense with 10 tackles, two broken up passes, and picked off two.

With offers on the table for Franklin from Alabama, Miami, Oregon, Iowa State, Hawaii, Arizona State, Oregon State, San Jose State, and Utah, I sat down for a quick interview covering the Menlo Park area product’s play on the field and recruiting process off of it.

Interview

Troy, the Bears had an amazing season rolling through the playoffs capturing a state title with a 21-7 win over Lincoln. What was clicking so well for the team leading to such a great season?

“We all stayed together as a team. At the beginning of the season, we had some guys get hurt, but we stayed together and kept working hard.”

You were an all-purpose talent for your team on offense as a runner and receiver. Your yard per catch average was unreal at 21.2 per reception. What were you doing so well to break off all those yards?

“I was staying true to my game and I was doing what my coaches told me to do.”

It might be even harder to do, but you nearly averaged the same rushing the ball at 18.2 yards per carry. How did that part of your game get showcased in 2018?

“I have to give a shout out to the offensive line. They opened up the holes, and I handled the rest.”

You also get a couple of picks on defense further showing your overall athleticism. How did the season go for you on that side of the ball?

“Same thing as on offense, I was reading my keys, staying in the right place, and doing my job.”

Of all the positions you play, which do you like best?

“I like receiver the best. That has been my main position since I was a young kid.”

What all will you work on this offseason to improve your game before your junior season?

“I am working on getting bigger, faster, stronger, and my footwork.”

Where all might we see you on the field in 2019?

“Next year I will be used a lot more on offense and special teams. I want to be even more useful everywhere on the field for my team. On defense, I will be at free safety and corner.”

With recruiting, how many offers do you have now?

“I have nine offers.”

Have you visited any schools yet?

“Yes. I have taken trips to Colorado and visited with Alabama watching one of their practices for the national championship game.”

What was it like getting to visit with Alabama for that practice?

“It was a good experience. I liked how they ran everything. They were organized and fast-paced.”

Do you have any planned visits coming up?

“I am not sure where I may go yet. I am looking at possible trips to Arizona State, Oregon, Alabama, Utah – every place that has offered me so far, hopefully.”

Troy, it was great learning more about you and your game today. I appreciate your time.

“Thank you.”
