A new defensive scheme for Carrollton High School has caused fits for 5A Georgia offenses this season. Running that scheme, it helps to have four-star linebackers in 2021 talent Chaz Chambliss and 2020 playmaker Kevin Swint. Swint is a Clemson commit, but the recruiting trail is still wide open for Chambliss. The 6-3, 239-pound, defender is a “must-get” prospect for college programs with 30 offers on the table. Chambliss has continued to impress scouts during the 2019 campaign coming in with 36 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, five sacks, eight quarterback hurries, and a fumble recover in stats from six of the team’s 8-0 start.

In an RNG confab, Chambliss and I pick up from our Aug. 29 interview covering his season to date and recruiting process.

Interview

Chaz, we last spoke after the first game of the season then covering all that you had worked on to prepare for the 2019 season. How is the season going?

“The season has been pretty good. We are 8-0. We are in line to win region. We have to beat this next team and we will be region champs and have a spot in the playoffs.”

Where are you seeing the improvements in your game?

“Film; that has been the biggest improvement in my game this year. Knowing where everything is and knowing the defense better; film is taking my game to the next level. Because I know the play and I am calling it out, I am making them change calls and everything.”

Are you doing anything differently on the field this season?

“Not really, except the way we run our defense. The sacks and hurries stats will be down this year, we are a 3-3. I am not always blitzing this year but I am protecting against the run more than going after the quarterback.”

We are you lining up in the defense?

“We are in a 3-3 stack, depending on the team we are playing and how they are running, I am at inside linebacker behind the defensive tackle but either slightly inside or slightly outside of him.”

How are teams scheming against you in hopes of limiting your impact?

“In our last game, they took advantage of their speed and up-tempo with a pass set to run it. They were double-teaming me with their offensive lineman. They had not done that before.”

Are teams running away from you?

“The teams are not running a certain way, they do try to run up the middle. They don’t come to my side or Kevin’s (Swint) side either. They try to out leverage us.”

What is one challenge you have gone through on the field that has made you a better player this year?

“The off-field situation I am in has been a challenge. My family situation, that has pushed me to be a better person and given me another reason to play hard.”

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Blessing to you and your family.

“Thank you.”

This season, which game have you turned in your top performance?

“Probably the Rome game (won 24-20). They were a top team in-state and we beat them. I had my best stats I have had this season. We shut down their offense and made them go outside their comfort zone. That helped us win the game.”

From the last time we spoke, I know you have 30 offers. If you will, update me on which schools are showing interest?

“LSU, Nebraska, Texas A&M and most of the SEC schools are showing interest.”

Since we spoke, have you taken any visits?

“Yes, sir. I went to Georgia for their game against Notre Dame. I was planning on going to LSU this weekend, but I can’t go now.”

Tell me about the Georgia game day visit.

“It went really well. I talked to Coach (Dan) Lanning (OLB) and my area recruiting coordinator, Coach (Dell) McGee (RB). At that game, that was their first game with new lights – they go all red with the stadium lights.”

You had the LSU trip planned, are there any other visits you may take soon?

“I would still like to go to LSU. I might go to A&M and I would like to go to Auburn, Florida, and Alabama games if possible.”

Chaz, I appreciate your time today and wish you and the Trojans success.

“Thank you.”
