Louisiana 3A football teams caught a break during the 2019 season with Class of 2021 athlete Solomon Lewis limited to a handful of games after an ankle injury. Lewis’ blazing speed, a 4.43 40-yard dash clocked at an LSU camp, was on display just enough last season to help earn four-star recruiting status and six scholarship offers. The 5-10, 160-pound, Lake Charles Prep standout pulled in 16 passes for 143 yards with two touchdowns and carried the rock seven times for 46 more yards. On defense, playing nickel and corner, Lewis had 10 tackles, five solo, with three tackles for a loss, and a sack during his first season as a defensive back. On special teams, he added two punt returns for 53 yards and two kick returns for 52 more further showing his all-purpose impact to the game.

Back healthy running track and preparing for his senior season, I sat down with Lewis for an RNG exclusive conversation covering ground on his season and his upcoming recruiting visits.

Interview

Solomon, you were putting a stamp on the “athlete” label for yourself during the 2019 season getting time all over the field. Where all did you line up last season?

“I lined up at slot, wideout, nickelback and corner, and kick and punt returner.”

Of all the positions played, which is your favorite?

“I love playing receiver, that is my favorite. That is what I am.”

On offense, in which ways were the coaches getting the ball into your hands?

“Intermediate routes and corner routes, many different routes.”

Other than being able to juke a safety from 15-yards away, how did your overall game improve on offense in 2019?

(Laughs) “I showed that I got a lot quicker, faster, and more consistent with my hands. I could not show everything due to the injury.”

Which coverages were you guys running on defense?

“Man and a lot of Cover 2.”

How did your overall game improve last season on defense?

“That was my first year playing defense, it improved a lot.”

Your speed is next level, listed at 4.43. Where did you drop that time?

“I ran that at an LSU camp last year.”

Impressive.

“Thank you.”

Which areas of your game are most important for you to work on this offseason?

“Staying consistent with my footwork, route running, and my hands. Improving my game overall.”

You already do so much, I even hesitate to ask, but are you taking on any new roles in 2020?

(Laughs). “No, I am sticking with all that I am already doing.”

Makes sense. With recruiting, which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“LSU is showing some, they texted me every other day.”

Which schools have offered so far?

“Houston, Louisiana Tech, Miami, Southern University, Texas Tech, and Tulane.”

Looking ahead, are you planning any unofficial visits?

“Yes. In March I am going to Texas Tech, LSU, Louisiana Tech, and I am trying to go to Notre Dame.”

Separate from football, are you competing in any other sports this year?

“Yes. I am running track.”

Which events?

“The 100, 4×1, and 4×2.”

What is your PR in the 100?

“My best time in the 100 is 10.7.”

Are there any camps on your schedule this spring?

“I am planning on attending a Rivals camp, an Under Armour camp, and The Opening.”

Solomon, thanks for your time today and good luck with all the upcoming camps and visits.

“Thank you.”
