Watching Class of 2021 talent Ceyair Wright in action, there is no doubt that he is coming into his own as an athlete and football player. Any skill position possible there is to play, Wright (6-0, 17) can do it. He has lined up at receiver, kick and punt returner, can carry the rock if asked, and is morphing into a shutdown corner that top California quarterbacks are not testing. The four-star recruit is a favorite among college coaches in the know with 17 offers dropped and top interest still coming his way.

With Loyola High School slugging it out in California’s Division I Mission League, and Wright taking visits along the recruiting trail, we caught up for a quick one-on-one interview.

*Interview was conducted before the Cubs’ Friday night game against Notre Dame High School

Interview

Ceyair, how has the 2019 season gone for you personally?

“Everything is going well. We have improved a lot since last season, and I am playing well. I cannot complain.”

You are making an impact in all three phases, where all are you lining up on the field this season?

“I am playing corner mostly, but I am also back on kick and punt return. I am not playing as much on offense, but when they need me, I come in on special plays. I am doing my best trying to make an impact for my team.”

As a defender, where are you seeing the improvements in your game?

“The biggest improvements in my game is my ability to shut down a receiver. Throughout the season, I have given up one catch so far. Last year I gave up more. I have improved on making them look the other way. I am making quarterbacks get antsy in the pocket.”

What are now the strengths to your game on defense?

“Good question. I feel like my strength is coming down in press coverage with my strength jamming receivers. I am playing off to show different looks. I am really good at recovery speed, if needed should I get out of position; I can get back into position quickly. That is a testament to my speed and training in the offseason. I have good hips keeping up with receivers on breaks.”

The Cubs had a bye last week, what did you work on to tighten up for the run through the Mission League?

“We’ve all been working hard, but on nothing specific. We are working for a Mission League championship. We are taking it game by game and getting ready for Notre Dame this week.”

Going into recruiting, which schools are showing interest?

“Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Northwestern and Wake Forest are the mains ones. I talk to them a lot. I have a lot of good schools that are on my radar.”

How many offers are you up to now?

“I have 17 offers.”

Wright’s Offer Sheet: Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, California, Florida Atlantic, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose State, USC, Utah, and Washington State

Have you taken any visits this fall?

“Yes. I went to Stanford, just went for the Washington game, and I am going to Cal on Saturday. I also went to USC for their game against Stanford.”

If you will, tell me how the Stanford visit went?

“I had a great time. We took pics in the black jersey. They are wearing them against UCLA. The campus is beautiful at Stanford.”

What has you excited about visiting Cal?

“I want to see the atmosphere there for a game and their campus. I have been up there before, but not on a real tour. They have a new locker room. I am going with one of my friends from school. I am expecting to have a good time.”

Are there any other planned trips ahead?

“We are planning on visiting Notre Dame at the end of the season and I am hoping to get to Arizona.”

Last time out, you guys beat a very talented Serra (Gardena) team 24-7. How did the team look in the win?

“We looked really good. We are clicking in all phases of the game. It was a good win. I was excited. We have a big game against Notre Dame next. Unfortunately, we did not get to play Alemany. We still have Chaminade and then Bishop Amat this season.”

As you have mentioned, this week you travel to Notre Dame to face another good team. What are you expecting from the Knights on Friday?

“They are a good and strong team. They will play all four quarters and in all phases. We are expecting a dog fight.”
