The skills on the gridiron are starting to line up with the offers along the recruiting trail for Class of 2023 quarterback Reese Mooney. Working in a new system with a new head coach at Denham Springs in 2020, Mooney threw for 1,000 yards with 11 touchdowns in five games. The poise and talents of the 6-1, 190-pound, quarterback against Louisiana 5A defenses has brought four-star recruiting status and 11 offers for Mooney.

As the offseason heats up with national camps popping up and with the baseball season getting going, Mooney, a two-sport standout committed to the Houston Cougars in baseball, stopped by the RNG Lab for another update interview.

Interview

Reese, each time I get to update my scouting on you, you keep showing those growing and improving athletic skills. The game footage shows you rolling out, throwing on the run, and making those off-platform throws. Do you feel like those less typical plays are becoming a norm in your arsenal?

Yes, sir they are. I have worked on them for so long. I keep working at my craft every day and in the film room to get in line with my coaches so I know where to go with the ball.

Sticking with that last part. From the mental part of the game, what were a few things that you learned during the 2020 season that will help you going forward?

Knowing the coverages, knowing the play, if they are playing on a receiver and checking out of that play. I have gotten better at that. I have been learning the game itself this whole season.

It has meant a lot to our program having Coach Beard come in as new head coach this past season. He holds everyone accountable, and we needed that. I have a new QB coach this year I’m excited to work with also, Eric France.

This offseason, what have you been working on with your skills and fundamentals?

This offseason I have been working on my footwork and working on my speed. My 40 is down to a 4.7. I am also working on the mental part of the game, like you said.

Is there one part of your game that you are more intently focused on than the rest?

My anticipation with the ball and knowing where my receivers will be. We throw off the break, so we will be money this upcoming season.

Are you going to any camps coming up?

Yes, sir. I got an invitation to compete at the Elite 11 Regional. I am not sure which one I will go to yet.

When does baseball season begin for you?

We had our first game two days ago. I went 2 for 3 with a double and a single. We really get going in two weeks.

Switching to recruiting. You are getting that boost in recruiting recognition. How many offers do you have now?

I have 11 offers.

Which programs were the last couple to offer?

Houston and then West Virginia, FIU, Bowling Green, and Syracuse, those came in a matter of about five days.

Mooney’s Offer Sheet: Bowling Green, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Houston, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Syracuse, and West Virginia

Which schools are now showing interest?

Arizona, Arizona State, Louisiana Tech, and I talked to Miami on Friday. It has been a blessing.

If visits pick up anytime soon, are there any schools you’d like to go see?

Yes. I’d like to see Arizona State, Arizona, and Miami. I want to see what they look like in person. FIU, FAU, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and I want to see Oregon too. That would be cool to see Oregon.

Reese, always great catching up with you. Wishing you continued success with your offseason workouts and with the upcoming baseball season.

Thank you, sir.
