When Los Osos High School took the field on offense during the 2018 season, opposing secondaries were sure to identify where No. 4 was on the field before each play. Even with Baseline League teams keying to stop Destin Harston, he still imposed his will to the tune of 42 receptions for 669 yards with six touchdowns in all 10 of the Grizzlies games played. Harston showed some of his overall athletic talents last season as a punt and kick returner but is taking his game to yet another level during his senior season playing corner.

With teams across the country taking notice in the 6-2.5, 197-pound, California prospect, I sat down for a quick update interview with Harston getting the inside scoop on his senior season preparations.

Interview

Destin, how have your offseason workouts gone?

“They have gone really well so far. With our team, the main thing our coach is preaching is conditioning. I am playing receiver and corner this year. Conditioning is important. We have a lot of guys playing both ways this year, we’ve been running a lot. We are running routes and learning plays getting ready for the season.”

You had a big junior season at receiver nearing the 700-yard mark. Which areas of your game have you improved upon over the spring and summer?

“I have mostly been working on my speed. Last year, I was fast but a lot of people told me I need to get faster. I have been working on getting off the line and beating the press.”

You mentioned playing corner this season, how have you worked on those skills this offseason?

“I have been working with Coach Davis, our DB coach. I have been working on my back pedal and the jam – we are playing a lot of man this year. I am getting my feet right for the season.”

Did you play 7v7 ball this offseason with a travel team?

“Yes. I played with Premium.”

How did working and training with Premium help your game?

“Playing with Premium, that went very well. We had a good season. I learned from the coaches and a lot from the guys on the team. I got my hands right and I worked on my one-on-one coverage.”

Did you go to any college camps this summer?

“Yes. I went to the USC Rising Stars Camp.”

What did you showcase of your skills at the USC camp?

“I was able to showcase my footwork. There were a lot of coaches asking me to go out to see my routes. I showcased my hands and how I can pick apart defenses.”

Entering your senior season, which schools are showing interest?

“I am receiving interest from Wyoming, Nevada, Arkansas, UNLV, and San Diego State. There are more that I can’t think of right now.”

Did you visit any schools this offseason?

“Yes, sir. I took visits to Louisville, Clemson, Kentucky, and Tennessee.”

Nice. What was it like for you getting to go to east coast to visit all those great schools?

“It was different. I loved it a lot. I had a great time at Louisville. I felt at home there. That was a great all-around visit.”

Looking to the season ahead. How has the team looked throughout spring and summer practices?

“From the spring to summer, we have gotten a lot better. We installed a new offense and a new defense. Guys were not comfortable with everything at first but now everyone is getting comfortable with offense and defense. We should be good this season.”

Is there a game on the schedule you are already excited to play?

“Yes, sir. I am very excited to play Rancho Cucamonga. I know some of the guys on the team. It is a big rivalry game for us.”

What goals have you set for the 2019 season?

“My goals, I plan on doubling all my stats. Instead of 700 yards I want 1,400 yards and instead of 40 receptions I want 80 receptions. My overall goal is working on perfecting my craft this season.”

Destin, it was great catching up with you today. I appreciate your time and wish you success with the upcoming season.

“Thank you.”
