There are talented seniors who wish they put together a season close to what Arron Chaney did during the 2018 schedule. Playing for Alta Loma, Chaney was an impact player in all three phases of the game getting on the scoreboard out of the backfield and in the slot, retuned punts, and knocked off helmets in run support while picking off passes at corner. The play of the 5-10, 160-pound, freshman helped the Braves to an 8-5 campaign. The beneficiary of the natural talent with speed and a ton of playmaking skills is headed towards a new challenge this offseason suiting up for California powerhouse Upland High School. Given Chaney’s unique overall skills, his addition to the Highlanders’ roster gives the squad yet another dynamic skill player ready to change the direction of a game in a heartbeat.

After an offseason grinding it out on the 7v7 circuit with Rharebreed and with the Highlanders’ fall camp set to go full-pads on Monday, I sat down with Chaney for an RNG exclusive interview.

Interview

Arron, the game film on you is impressive, especially for a freshman. Where all did you line up on the field during the 2018 season?

“I played receiver, running back, and corner.”

How did last year go for you personally?

“Personally, it was a good season. I got some good film. It was good for me personally; instead of playing freshman ball I was able to play varsity ball. I was able see what it is like to play against good schools and good talent.”

How have you been training this offseason for the action you will see in 2019?

“I have been training a lot more working on my conditioning and lifting weights I have been doing a lot of field work with Coach Rob (Rharebreed).”

How has that extra training helped you expand your game?

“It has helped a lot. Rharebreed has helped the growth of my athleticism. I am such a better athlete now than last year.”

Did you go through spring practices with Upland?

“Yes, sir.”

Based on spring and summer practices, where all might you line up on the field this season?

“I am lining up at slot and corner.”

What have you been working specifically as a receiver this offseason?

“I have been working on reading defense to adjust my route. I have been working on my breaks, coming in and out of them, and my hands.”

And as a corner, what have you been working on at that position?

“I have been working on my off-man and press. I have been working on being able to play good zone coverage.”

Did you play 7v7 this offseason?

“Yes, sir. I played with Rharebreed.”

What was that 7v7 experience like for you after your breakout freshman season?

“It was a great experience. With Rharebreed, they are teaching you things they have learned from high school, college, and the pros. They have advanced my game a lot.”

Did you play any other sports this past school year?

“Yes, sir. I ran track.”

Which events?

“The 100, 200, 400, and the 4×1.”

What was your personal record in the 100?

“My PR in the 100 is 11.3.”

Nice. Back to football. When do the Highlanders begin fall practices putting the pads on to prepare for the 2019 season?

“We are about to start fall camp. We are in helmets this week and next week we are full-fledge in the pads. We go fully on Monday.”

What has you excited about the upcoming year on the field?

“I love the fact that I get to play against top competition and top schools this season. Playing with Upland is like playing with a family. Upland is a football school. I am so excited to get better and grow with my teammates this season.”

Arron, it was great getting time in with you today. Good luck with fall camp and the upcoming season.

“Thank you.”
