There is never anything easy in the 5A Texas high school football ranks, and guys like Class of 2021 quarterback Sawyer Robertson is making life rough for opposing defensive coordinators and his players. Robertson jumped onto the scene in an explosive way during his sophomore season leading his Coronado High School squad to a 10-3 record and is setting up for another run into the playoffs in 2019.

If one was watching Coronado High School during the 2018 season from the stands, you would have thought Robertson was a seasoned senior veteran working an Air Raid offense marching up and down the field. The 6-3.5, 200-pound, gunslinger worked all aspects of the offense throwing for 3,564 yards with 43 touchdowns against just seven interceptions while rushing for 168 yards with five trips into the end zone. Hidden inside the big stats, Robertson completed 65 percent of his passes hitting on 313 of 483 attempts.

That same attack-attack-attack mentality is on display with the same prolific nature and accuracy. The Mustangs are 4-4 behind an offense securing 35 point per contest seeing Robertson hit 174 of 271 attempts, 64 percent, for 2,665 yards with 26 touchdowns tossed. His ability to use his strengths and understanding of the offense in dynamic fashion has already brought in offers from SMU, Tulsa, Washington State, and Wisconsin.

To learn more about Robertson’s skills and recruiting opportunities, I sat down with the four-star recruit for an in-depth one-on-one.

Interview

Sawyer, you are the force that drives a Mustangs’ engine that is putting up 35 a game. How are you preparing for each game to lead the high-scoring attack?

“We try to prepare each week the same way, that is a combination of a lot of film knowing what the defense will do so we know how to react. Our offensive line and receivers do a great job of preparing like I do. We work really hard. It is all clicking right now.”

What style of offense are you running this season?

“We run the Spread.”

Within the scheme, what are some of the routes you are throwing to this year?

“I like throwing all kinds of routes, but my favorite is the long ball – I like going vertical. I also like the out routes 12- to 15-yards. I like curls too; those routes get open a bunch.”

How are you seeing your understanding of the game grow this season?

“It is growing a lot. I feel like last year, playing as a sophomore, now I am going through my progressions and making the right throws. There are some bad ones here and there, but that happens. I have a better understanding of when to run it or throw it like in a scramble drill. I am putting up better numbers this year.”

Which areas of your technique and/or overall game are showing the biggest improvements?

“What a lot of people don’t know, I did not start playing football until my 8th grade year. My ball is looking a lot better now in my fourth year of throwing consistently every day. I am releasing it really well. I have grown too. I am getting bigger and stronger in the weight room. With my footwork, I am a multiple sport athlete. I can set my feet and throw at any time. I throw really well on the run as well.”

This season, which game has been your best performance?

“I’ve had a few good games. Early in the season we were still adjusting to everything on offense with the new and young guys. Around Week 5 we started clicking. A couple of weeks ago, against Monterey, I threw for over 500 yards completing 75 percent of my passes with five touchdowns passing, and had two called back, it should have been seven touchdowns, and I had one rushing touchdown.”

That certainly qualifies as a top game. Congratulations.

“Thank you.”

Throwing the ball around the yard like that, which schools are showing interest?

“I am receiving letters from LSU, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Cal, and UCLA.”

How many offers have you received?

“Four.”

From the summer to now, which schools have you visited?

“This summer I visited SMU, TCU, and Texas A&M. SMU was a big one for me.”

Tell me about the SMU visit.

“It was awesome. I was really excited about that visit; they were my first offer. They offered around this time of my sophomore year during our bye week. I was super excited. They are 8-0 this season and are a College Game Day team; that is encouraging and positive for me.”

Are there any planned visits ahead?

“Yes. I will visit SMU again and Washington State and Tulsa, probably after the season.”

Earlier you mentioned being a multi-sport athlete, which other sports do you play?

“I played basketball my freshman and sophomore years, but I will not play this year. I enjoy playing baseball more. Basketball goes into baseball season.”

Which positions in baseball do you play?

“Outfield and pitcher.”

What kind of stuff are you throwing on the mound?

“When I pitch, I throw it as hard as I can. My goal is to throw it by people.”

The team got a big 58-48 road win over Monterey last time out. How did the team look in the win?

“It was great. Our defense was getting stops. When they got stops, we capitalized. When the offense struggled, the defense picked us up and when they struggled, we picked them up. We are working out some kinks, but then we will be a really good football team.”

You get Palo Duro on Thursday. What kind of game are you looking at from their defense?

“We expect to see what they have been running all season. We look to throw the ball; we are an Air Raid offense. It is supposed to be cold; that is a big thing for us this week. We will play how we have been playing the past few weeks.”

Sawyer, thanks for your time today; it was fun. Wishing you and the team success closing out the season.

“Thank you.”
