So it seems, California is chalked full of standout athletes on the gridiron making it even harder for anyone to truly rise above the rest. No matter how flooded the market, Class of 2021 athlete Jamier Johnson came to play in 2018 announcing his presence scattering his name on recruiting boards across the nation in the process.

The 2018 season was a great one for Northview High School. The Vikings posted a 12-1 record seeing the rise of a super sophomore in Johnson along the way. The 6-0, 173-pound, two-way standout broke out on offense with 35 receptions for 539 yards with nine touchdowns. When the ball was going the other way, he put an end to 36 plays, 29 solo, with two tackles for a loss and a pick. The action on the field has already led to offers from Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Rutgers, and Utah State.

In an RNG exclusive, I caught up with Johnson in the middle of his offseason grind, a transfer from Northview to John Muir High School (Pasadena) and ahead of two planned visits to Power 5 Conference programs.

Interview

Jamier, you had a great breakout season in 2018 playing on both sides of the ball. I have a tough question for you… if Jamier the corner was guarding Jamier the receiver, who wins the matchup?

(Laughs) “Honestly, the corner wins. It would be a good matchup. I bring that dog out at cornerback.”

On offense, you have that extra gear on the go-routes seemingly getting separation with ease, what are some of the other traits to your game on that side of the ball?

“My route running helps a lot. I can switch it up. I have speed, and I know I can run by them. My speed and my agility are the big traits.”

With your cover skills, you stick on your guy and stay in your backpedal longer than most, what are some of the other strengths to your game on that side of the ball?

“My patience and I have good hips, I know I can stay with the receivers. Another strength is my eye discipline and watching their hips. The rest is the dog in me.”

What are you working on with your game as a corner this spring?

“My strength, my hips, patience, and perfecting my craft as much as possible.”

As a receiver, what are you working on?

“I am working on my footwork, my hands, and getting faster.”

You transferred from Northview to John Muir, how is the transfer going?

“It has been smooth, real easy and good. I see our team next year being very good.”

Will your roles on offense or defense change in 2019?

“Whatever they need me to do, I will do. Whatever they ask of me I will do.”

Are you playing 7v7 ball with a travel team?

“Yes. I am playing with ProWay.”

How is that going?

“It is going well. We have a tournament this weekend, an Adidas tournament. I am ready to show what I can do there.”

Have you gone to any national camps yet?

“I have been invited to Nike and Under Armour. I competed at the U.S. Army All-American Combine already.”

How did that go?

“It went well. I showed my quickness and my lateral movement.”

Which ones might you go to upcoming?

“I may go to the Oakland Nike Regional in May.”

With recruiting, which schools are showing interest?

“I am receiving interest from BYU and Florida.”

Are you going to visit any schools this offseason?

“I have a planned visit with Arizona over spring break and I am setting up a visit to Rutgers.”

Because you are a standout on both sides of the ball, at which position are the schools recruiting you to play?

“They are recruiting me to play corner.”

Jamier, I appreciate your time today and wish you luck with the 7v7 tournaments.

“Thank you.”
