There is a changing of the guard at West Ranch High School seeing Class of 2019 quarterback Weston Eget turn over the starting duties for the Wildcats to younger brother Walker. Weston completed his senior season passing for 2,752 yards with 25 touchdowns while rushing for 217 yards. Walker (5-11.5, 167) tore it up against his peer group in 2018 completing 175 of 347 passes for 2,606 yards with 26 scores in just nine games giving way to optimism about future success for the player and the Wildcats offense for years to come. Plugging into the offseason grind going on in Valencia (CA), I sat down with Walker for an in-depth one-on-one learning more about his style of play and QB specific workouts with area quarterback guru Danny Hernandez.

Interview

Walker, the 2018 season had to be a great one for you tearing it up against your peer group throwing for over 2,600 yards and getting to learn at the varsity level under your older brother. How did the season play out for you personally on the field?

“I think it played out tremendously well. Both my brothers have done great things on and off the field. They work as hard as they can and push me to make me better on and off the field.”

Throwing for that many yards with 26 touchdowns had to be a big boost to your self-confidence as a quarterback. What other areas of your game took a step-up last season?

“I feel that trusting in the abilities of my teammates was a big step for me. They made great catches, ran great routes and my offensive line was great all season holding their blocks. My capabilities reading defenses showed. In nine games during my freshman year, I threw for seven or eight touchdowns without taking a sack. My ability to escape the pocket showed a lot this year.”

What are you working on this offseason with your technique?

“I am working on my proper form, staying in the weight room to get bigger and stronger, and working the ladders for speed and agility. Coach Danny Hernandez has been helping me read defenses. Quickness and strength are my two biggest things I am working on this offseason.”

I was about to ask you which QB coach you are working with this offseason. What are you and Coach Danny Hernandez working on other than reading defenses during one-on-one sessions?

“He is helping me with everything. He is helping me with my quick game, getting out of pressure, everything you do not even think of that you will face in a game. You go into the game and you just do it without thinking. You don’t realize you are doing it but it is there because you practice it with Coach Danny. It just comes out because he has put you in so many different situations that you will face in a game.”

Where are you seeing the biggest improvements this offseason in your game?

“I am seeing the biggest improvement with my arm strength and improvement with my off arm staying back while getting power through my hips.”

Do you watch videos on any current or former quarterbacks to learn more about the game?

“Oh yes. Plenty.”

Who are you watching and what are you seeking out?

“I love watching Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks). I watch clips of him talking about cues in the L. It is all quick movement, sudden but calm. I love watching Tom Brady with his off-arm, with his steps and how quickly he releases the ball.”

The Wildcats offense had big weapons in seniors Ryan and Jovan Camacho in 2018, how are you working with the skill guys on the team this offseason to bring that same kind of firepower to the field in 2019?

“I think that will be a big loss for the team but we will make it up with guys like Jackson Reyes. We have some kids coming back who are making big improvements with Coach Yonkers.”

Walker, for this offseason to have been a successful one before fall camp begins with the Wildcats, what needs to happen?

“For us to have another winning season, this offseason is about our dedication to the team and building on our success from last season. We have to keep working hard to get back to the playoffs like last year.”

Walker, I appreciate your time today and wish you success with your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
