An athletic big man in the trenches who can get after it on both sides of the ball, that is a quick thumbnail version of what Jayce Jones brings to the field for Silsbee High School. At 6-6, 220, Jones has the size, long arms, and speed to impact the run and passing game on offense at tight end. When the field is flipped for the Tigers, on passing downs he comes in as an edge rusher in the team’s 4-3 scheme. The skill and upside to Jones’ game has brought an offer from Memphis with college programs following along via Twitter.

In an RNG first-look interview, Jones took a break from school work and the 4A Texas High School Basketball Playoffs to update us on his sophomore season on the field and recruiting process.

Interview

Jayce, during the 2020 season, what all were you doing on the field for the Tigers?

I was blocking really well and catching the ball lining up at tight end. I was also playing defensive end and defensive tackle.

What offensive scheme were the Tigers executing during the season?

It is a run heavy offense. 21 personnel, sometimes with two tight ends.

What defensive scheme were you guys running and what were your roles within the set?

A 4-3; I was rushing the passer.

On offense, how did you see your skills as a tight end improve?

I was moving a lot better, getting faster, my route running got better, and my blocking got better.

How did your blocking improve?

My hand placement and my hook blocking on ends and outside linebackers.

When the 2021 season gets going, where all might we see you on the field? Are you keeping the same roles?

Yes, sir. Mainly, I will be at tight end but some at defensive end and tackle.

So far, what have you been working on as a tight end this winter?

Getting bigger, faster, and stronger. I have been working on my route running, my get off, and blocking.

How are you improving your overall athleticism and speed this offseason?

Running hills – I train every weekend. I get on the speed treadmill working with my trainer. I also train with “AG” for explosiveness and speed.

Are you playing any other varsity sports?

Yes, sir. I play basketball.

Ya’ll got some ballers on the basketball team; No. 12 and No. No. 14. How is the season going?

It is going really well. We are one game out from state.

That’s awesome.

Thank you.

Back to football. Are there any camps coming up on your schedule?

On March 14, I am going to the Under Armour camp in Dallas.

Let’s talk recruiting. Which schools, that you know of, are showing recruiting interest?

I am not sure. On Twitter I have follows from Florida State, Michigan, and a whole bunch of other college coaches.

You picked up that first very cool offer; which school offered you?

Memphis.

Receiving that first offer from Memphis, what was that moment like for you?

I couldn’t believe it. It was amazing. My dad told me I got the offer. I couldn’t believe it. I started running around because I couldn’t believe.

Jayce, I appreciate your time today updating us on your football and basketball season. Wishing you and the Tigers success on the hardwood in the playoffs.

Thank you, sir.
