The recruitment of Class of 2019 offensive lineman Angel Flores is emblematic of a drastic change in how college offenses running the spread offense dominate the recruiting trail. At 6-5, 350-pounds, Flores is a beast in the trenches ideally fit for a ground and pound pro-style set at the collegiate level which in years past would have netted him some 20 scholarship offers by now; how many running backs would not love to run behind Flores for a 1,000 easy rushing yards? Yet, even though Flores is extremely talented, has the size and strength, he is being sorely overlooked by college scouts across the country. But, a big senior year awaits the Dos Pueblos Senior standout.

With an offer on the table from San Jose State, and some Pac-12 interest brewing, I sat down with Flores in the midst of the Chargers’ fall camp for an overall update on football and recruiting.

Interview

Angel, how have your offseason and summer workouts gone?

“Really well. I have been focusing on my feet and allusiveness.”

Where are you seeing the biggest improvement in your technique on offense?

“I am seeing the biggest gains with my down blocking, being able to down block anyone, and having a better overall run game.”

Are you going to play any defense this year?

“A little bit but not as much. They will bring me in on goal line and red zone plays.”

Did you max out this summer before fall camp?

“No, but I know my approximate maxes. My max on squat is around 510, bench is 325, and my deadlift is around 500.”

Nice. When did the Chargers start fall camp?

“We started a week ago.”

How is the team looking?

“We are doing pretty good. We have three solid backs. If all goes to plan we will have more than 3,000 rushing yards this year.”

In about 12 days the season starts, are you hyped and pumped for the opener against Foothill?

“Yes. I am really excited to start off my senior season. I am ready to play.”

Are there any other games on the schedule you are excited to play this season?

“Lompoc.”

If you will, update me on your recruiting interest, which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“Arizona State, Colorado State, Washington State, and Azusa Pacific are the main schools showing interest right now.”

Since we last spoke, you received an offer from San Jose State. What was that like for you receiving your first Division-I college football scholarship offer?

“It was life changing. I worked so hard for it, and I achieved it. We were at the USC camp, Coach (Joe) Bernardi (offensive line) and I kept in touch. I knew he was going to be there for the camp. The camp went well, and he talked to me afterwards and offered me on the spot.”

Have you set any unofficial or official visits for the fall yet?

“No, not yet.”

Last question, back to football. Outside of winning a state title, what goals have you set for yourself this season on the field?

“I want to dominate every single game that I play. I want to ball out this year.”

Angel, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of camp and the upcoming season.

“Thank you.”
