Olathe West’s Trey Krause has registered over 100 tackles in both seasons in his program’s young history. During his junior year, this rising star defensive back registered 143 total tackles, three interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. After helping lead the Owls to a 6-4 record and an appearance in the second round of the state playoffs in 2019, Krause and the rest of his teammates are ready to take another step deeper into the Kansas playoffs and write another chapter in Olathe West’s short history book.

On the gridiron, this 6’0”, 185-pound, field general uses his tremendous quickness and athleticism to make big tackles all over the field. Krause also possesses great reaction to his opponents’ plays, agility and footwork. The Class of 2021 recruit already holds two college offers and is drawing interest from several big-time college programs including Kansas, Wake Forest and North Dakota State.

Not only does Krause star on the football team but also on the track team and currently holds a weighted GPA of 4.1 in the classroom.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with the Olathe West star to talk about his junior season and get an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Trey, what are your thoughts on the 2019 season?

“As a team we came a long way with a lot to prove as a new school. As a second-year varsity team we went 5-3 in the regular season and finished 6-4. As a young team the last two years, I am really excited to see what we can finally do as we will be a senior-heavy class.”

How would you grade your individual performance last year and why?

“I would give myself 90 percent, because I made a lot of tackles, 143 of them to be exact, but at times I need to put myself in a better spot to make an easier play. There is always more to learn.”

What are your strengths on the football field?

“I am able to react quickly to what the offense is doing. I dissect film to understand the opposing team’s game plan and their play-makers.”

What was your most memorable moment last season?

“Winning the Hy-Vee Five Star Athlete of the Week Award was one of my memorable moments. Even though the award had my name on it, it was just as much as a team recognition for all the hard work we have done together.”

Did you receive any individual honors or awards last season?

“In 2019, Hy-Vee Five Star Athlete of the Week, All-League First-Team, Defensive Kansas Tackle Leader, First-Team All-State, First-Team All-Class, All-Simone Team, Team Defensive MVP, and in 2020 the Kansas Preps All-Star Best of Kansas Award.”

What kind of challenges did you face last year?

“We were a young team we had to find ways to win.”

How did you overcome this challenge?

“Our coaches did a great job of using our strengths. They put countless hours in breaking down film to make sure they could put us in a position to win in the fourth quarter.”

What is your practice and workout schedule during the off-season?

“With these crazy times, I have been able to still workout several times a day. In the morning I workout at the park with a couple other teammates. We challenge each other to continue our Olathe West workouts. Next, I workout with my brother doing his Northwestern football workout, and then I run routes so I can work on ball skills and he can work on throwing the ball. I also work on footwork with my defensive backs coach.”

What are you working on to most improve your game?

“I am always working to get physically bigger, stronger, faster, and improving my craft as a defensive back.”

Do you have any college offers?

“I have two: Minnesota State and Quincy University.”

What other schools are showing interest at this time?

“At this time some schools showing interest are Kansas University, North Dakota State, University of Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, Upper Iowa, Wake Forest, and Dartmouth.”

Have you been to any college camps?

“Last summer I went to Penn, Princeton, and Harvard. Camps were cut short as I had to get stitches in my foot. This summer I was invited to Kansas State, Kansas, Northwestern, Purdue, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Dartmouth, Princeton, Penn, and Harvard.”

Have you visited any colleges?

“I was able to visit Kansas, North Dakota State, and Princeton.”

Which was your favorite visit and why?

“Each campus has its own unique favorite memory. I like meeting the coaches and seeing their football environment; understanding what it would be like to play for them.”

What do you like most about playing your favorite position?

“I love playing safety. It’s a spot on the field to make big plays and change the game, and I get to be involved in the run and pass game. I will also play receiver this season.”

What is your fastest 40-yard dash time?

“My fastest time is a 4.59.”

Do you play any other sports in high school?

“I do track and my events are the open 4, 4×1, 4×4 and long jump.”

Who has had the biggest impact on your football career?

“I could not just say one person, as my family, as a whole, has played a huge role in my success on the football field. My brothers were always there to play catch or start a football game. I learned a lot from having two older brothers. My mom, dad and sister are always there cheering me on.”

What is your GPA?

“I have a 4.1 weighted GPA.”

Do you have a favorite quote or Bible Verse?

“My favorite Bible verse is II Corinthians 5:7 – “We walk by faith, not by sight.”

What is your favorite thing about playing at your high school?

“I love playing at my school for the atmosphere; our community is connected to our football program.”

Thank you for your time and good luck in your senior season.

“Thank you, sir.”
