Avery Johnson burst onto the scene during the 2020 season as the sophomore playmaker led Maize High School to a 9-2 record and an appearance in the 5A quarterfinals. During his sophomore campaign, the 6’3”, 175-pound, star threw for 1,724 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for 385 yards and 10 more scores. After the season, he received several individual honors.

Johnson plays with tremendous leadership and play-making abilities both through the air and on the ground. He possesses good athleticism, footwork, and a strong and accurate arm.

This Class of 2023 recruit already has offers from TCU and Iowa State and is also receiving interest from Kansas State.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with the three-sport star to talk about his sophomore season and get an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Avery, how would you grade your individual performance during your sophomore season?

I feel like as a sophomore season it was pretty good, but there’s always room for improvement. We finished 9-2 and came up short of our final game. I am looking forward to having a great offseason to make a run for a ring.

Which would you say was your best game and why?

My best game was in the second round of the playoffs, because I was effective with my arm and legs. I finished with four total touchdowns and we won 59-27.

Did you receive any individual honors?

First-team All-League and All-State honorable mention.

What are your strengths on the football field?

Being a leader and taking control of the offense. At the quarterback position, you have to hold everyone including yourself accountable.

What kind of offense does Maize run?

We run a Spread offense.

How do your skills fit into this offense?

I’m able to be a threat through the air or with my legs. Also, my coach gives me the freedom to audible into different looks.

Would you consider yourself a dual-threat or pro-style quarterback?

Definitely a dual-threat. Defenses have to respect my ability to run or throw while I’m outside the pocket.

Is there an NFL player that you try to model your game after?

Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes, because I like Wilson’s leadership and playmaking abilities and Mahomes’ heart and ability to complete difficult throws.

What do you like most about playing at Maize?

The coaches, because I have a great relationship with them and they all play a part in the player I’m becoming.

What is your routine to get focused on game day?

Music is the key.

Do you play any other sports in high school?

I’m a middle infielder on the baseball team and a combo guard on the basketball team.

What is your favorite subject and why?

Math, because it has always been easy for me.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My dad, because he pushes me and motivates me to be not only a great athlete but a great person.

How many offers do you have and from which schools?

TCU and Iowa State.

Are there any other schools showing interest in you?

Kansas State.

Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?

Philippians 4:13.

What is your GPA?

4.125.

What are your goals for the offseason?

I want to gain weight and get more accurate with my arm. I’m going to work to get stronger and more explosive as well.

Thank you for your time today.
