Junior defensive back Korin Koenig burst onto the scene in 2020 as he racked up 75 total tackles, four interceptions, and four pass breakups while leading to Riley County High School to an appearance in the Kansas 3A state quarterfinals. The 6-0, 175-pound, hard hitter has tremendous ability to read opposing offenses and has the quickness, speed and footwork to deliver big hits all over the gridiron.

This Class of 2022 prospect is putting his name out there this summer by attending camps and is working hard to receive his first offer.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with Korin to talk about his junior season and his preparations for his upcoming senior campaign.

Interview

Korin, how would you grade your performance during your junior season?

I would say I had a pretty solid season my junior year. I led the team in interceptions (4) and was top three on the team in tackles (75 total). I still have a lot to work on to perfect my game, but plan to have another successful season with a great team and work put in this offseason.

What would you say was your best game and why?

I would say my best game of the season was the second game of the season against Minneapolis, I ended the game with six tackles and two interceptions. I also had 18 tackles against Andale in the sectional game in the playoffs but we fell short.

What are your strengths on the football field?

I would say my biggest strength as a safety is my ability to make quick reads on a pass or run and quickly make a play in both the pass and run game.

Did you receive any individual honors?

I was awarded first team All-Mid-East League, All-District first team, and first team All-Flint Hills.

What kind of defensive scheme does your school run?

Our defense is often a 3-4 but in power situations or games we sometimes switch to a 4-3. 95 percent of the time we had four defensive backs in coverage.

How do your skills fit into this scheme?

I believe this scheme fits my skills very well because it is a pass first mindset that also presents opportunities to make a play on the ball carrier.

What is your favorite thing about playing defensive back?

My favorite thing about playing DB is the mental game. Having the disadvantage initially but studying a matchup or scheme and learning reads to give you the upper hand, before the game and during.

Is there an NFL player that you try to model your game after?

There is no specific NFL player I have modeled my game after, but I love watching Tyrann Matthieu, because of his feel for the game and intensity at nearly the same size as mine.

Do you play any other sports in high school?

I also compete in basketball, baseball, and track.

Have you attended any camps this offseason?

I have attended the Dallas Showcase at Southern Methodist University and a Stephen F. Austin camp. I plan on attending more upcoming in July.

Are you receiving interest from any schools?

I haven’t received much interest from college coaches yet but I’m hoping the rest of this summer and my senior tape can change that.

What are you working on the most this offseason?

This offseason I have largely been working in the weight room and on my hips, backpedal speed, and mobility.

What is your GPA?

4.0 GPA.

Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” – Michael Jordan

What are your goals for your senior season?

My main goal for the upcoming season is to win the 3A state championship while receiving honors as an All-State safety.

Thank you for your time.

Thank you, sir.
