Despite some setbacks, Davis Sellers showed he can face adversity and still come out on top. The junior defensive end put up some impressive numbers during the 2020 season in only five games, due to Covid-19 and a shoulder injury. The 6’3”, 225-pound, tackle machine had 34 total tackles including 17 for a loss, two sacks, 10 quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and one forced fumble taking on Louisiana 5A teams.

Sellers has tremendous strength, physicality, and athleticism which he uses to bully opposing offensive linemen. He also has good hands and plays with a high motor. The Class of 2022 recruit is already drawing interest from Louisiana Tech along with several Ivy League schools building the anticipation to his first college offer.

Sellers, not only stars on the gridiron but also on the track team and in the classroom where he currently holds a 4.0 GPA.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I was able to catch up with Davis to talk about his junior season and get an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Davis, how would you describe your individual performance during your junior season?

I would grade my performance as a B. I did my job and I was able to make some plays, but I always want to do more. I couldn’t have done any of it without my teammates and coaches.

What was your best game and why?

My best game was against Parkway where I had 10 total tackles, six for a loss, and two quarterback hurries.

What are your strengths on the football field?

My strengths on the field are my physical strength, ability to use my hands, and my care for the game. As a defensive end that comes in handy.

How do your skills fit into Benton’s defensive scheme?

My skills fit into our scheme because I’m able to allow my linebackers, like Ashur Hall, to make plays while we reset the line of scrimmage up front.

How would you describe what kind of player you are?

I am focused and responsible. On game day, I try to focus only on what my job is for that night. And in practice, my focus is on learning my job for that week.

How would you describe what kind of teammate you are?

My goal is to be a selfless teammate and to be a proud teammate as well. I feel like I do a pretty good job that.

What kind of challenges did you face this season?

As a team, we faced several close losses. We lost four games by a total of 14 points. Personally, I faced the challenge of a shoulder separation injury in our game against Haughton and a two-week team quarantine. Missing three games was a new experience for me and it proved extremely tough to deal with.

How did you overcome these challenges?

We overcame these losses as a team and never gave up on our season and kept grinding all the way through. I was able to overcome the shoulder injury by doing physical therapy and with the help of our great trainer, I was able to only miss one game due to the injury.

What are your maxes in the weight room?

My bench press max is 335, my squat max is 485, and my max power clean is 295.

Is there an NFL player that you try to model your game after?

I try to model my game after TJ Watt, especially when he has his hand in the dirt. I look forward to getting work next season as an outside linebacker as well.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to be graduating college, and hopefully finishing up a successful college football career, and moving on to a career path.

What do you like most about playing at Benton High School?

The family atmosphere in Benton is like no other. Our community rallies around our team and it’s very special. The support that my brothers and I have for each other is something I wish everyone could experience.

What are your goals for the rest of your high school career?

My goals for the rest of my career are to represent Benton well and to keep improving as a person, student, and player.

Do you play any other sports at Benton?

I throw shot-put and discus for the track team.

What is your GPA?

My GPA is 4.0-plus.

Are you receiving interest from any schools?

Harding University, Louisiana Tech and I’m receiving interest from several Ivy League schools such as Penn, Yale, and Harvard.

Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?

My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Thank you for your time today.

Thank you, sir.
