It was a thrilling weekend of first round action in the Louisiana 5A playoffs as there were several exciting games and a few upsets. The upsets included No. 25 Live Oak defeating No. 8 Ouachita Parish 33-28 and No. 18 Dutchtown dominating No. 15 Ruston 31-17. One of the most exciting games on Friday was when No. 14 Barbe squeaked past No. 19 Haughton 33-27.

There were several great individual performances including Parkway quarterback Keondre Wudtee (Louisiana Tech) threw for 345 yards and 3 touchdowns completing 14-of-21 passes. Mandeville quarterback Cody Orgeron also had a great game as he threw for 220 touchdowns and three touchdowns. Zachary quarterback Lindsey Scott (Syracuse) led his Broncos to a 54-32 win as he threw for 253 yards, ran for 121 yards, and had six total touchdowns.

Other players to watch in the eight second round games

John Ehret: athlete Ca’Ron Baham (Missouri) and linebacker Dejon Harris (Arkansas)

Destrehan: defensive lineman Gerald Wilbon (Texas) and Glen Logan (LSU)

Acadiana: linebacker Kevin Moore (Texas Tech)

Dutchtown: quarterback Jared Sparks (Southern Miss)

Zachary: offensive lineman Kellton Hollins (TCU) and wide receiver Douglas Coleman

West Monroe: linebacker Layton Garnett

Hahnville: offensive lineman Drew Melancon (Louisiana Tech)

Ponchatoula: defensive end Jahaziel Lee (Louisiana-Lafayette) and offensive lineman Donavaughn Campbell (LSU).

All four semifinalists from the 2014 playoffs are still alive so it will be interesting how many of the returning teams can advance to the next round of the playoffs.

Can No. 25 seed Live Oak pull off another upset and reach the quarterfinals? Who will advance to the quarterfinals in a rematch of the 2013 state championship game when Acadiana travels to Bossier City to take on Parkway in the second round? Will there be any upsets in the second round? All these questions will be answered on Friday night when eight teams clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.
