Louisiana High School Football Week 1 Review

The clock has run out on the first weekend of high school football and fans have gotten their first glimpse of their favorite teams and players. There were just tremendous individual and team efforts put out in the opening weekend which excited not only the coaches on the sidelines but also the fans in the stands.

With the Week 1 games in the books, fans, players and coaches are already counting the days until it is time to suit up for Week 2.

Notable Louisiana Game Recaps

Bishop Dunne Falcons (TX) 23, Evangel Christian Academy Eagles 14

Bishop Dunne came into Shreveport and dominated Evangel. The Falcons defense came to play and didn’t let the Eagles get a first down until the third quarter. Bishop Dunne was led to victory by senior quarterback Matthew Yelverton who threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns and kicker Tucker Littlelton who connected on three field goals including two from 45 yards out.

Evangel’s two scores came on a 43-yard fumble return by Na’Drain Dizadare (Oklahoma State commit) in the second quarter and on a 15-yard by senior Tamauge Sloan in the fourth quarter. Sloan finished with 98 yards on 17 carries.

C.E. Byrd Yellow Jackets 35, Calvary Baptist Cavaliers 8

Thursday night turned into a track meet for the Yellow Jackets as they ran the ball down the throats of Cavaliers. Byrd was led to victory by senior fullback Charlie Barham who finished with 230 yards and four touchdowns in the first half and one series in the second half. The Purple Swarm defense of the Yellow Jackets kept Calvary silent for the majority of the night.

The Cavaliers only score came on a 34-yard pass from quarterback Cade Hart to Joseph Wilson. Calvary’s star running back Isaiah Brown was limited to 35 total yards.

Captain Shreve Gators 44, Green Oaks 22

In the only game on Saturday in the Shreveport area, 5A Captain Shreve pulled away from 3A Green Oaks in the second half to open the season with a victory. The Gators opened the game on a 16-0 run before leading at halftime 23-14. Captain Shreve scored three more times in the second half to pull away from the Giants.

The Gators were led to victory by junior quarterback Darrius Grant who threw for 167 yards and scored two total touchdowns and their two star running backs, DJ Fleming and Ladarrein Frierson, both eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark and scored two touchdowns each.

Green Oaks was led by their young sophomore quarterback Keith Baker who threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Davion Sanders caught two scores and finished with 150 receiving yards on six receptions. Senior playmaker Khryie Poole chipped in with 94 receiving yards on seven catches and one touchdown. On a positive note for the Giants, they won the turnover battle and finished the game with more first downs then the Gators.
