It was an action-packed opening weekend of high school football in Louisiana as fans all over the state were finally able to see their team in action.

It was a night full of epic victories, heart-breaking losses and big plays. Unfortunately, the biggest news coming out of Week 1 was one of heartbreak as Justin Rogers, star quarterback at Parkway and a TCU commit, dislocated his right knee in the second quarter of his team’s win against Booker T. Washington. His team was still able to rally to a 35-8 victory but the effects of Rogers’ injury will be felt all season.

Another big story from Friday night was Ruston’s 19-10 victory at Neville. Neville is a perennial powerhouse team in 4A and they will need to come back strong next week to secure their first victory of 2017.

Highlighted Week One Match-Ups

Captain Shreve Gators 48, Green Oaks Giants 20

Senior running back James Ivory led Captain Shreve to victory with 199 yards and one touchdown. Ivory sat most of the second half and fell just one yard short of becoming the school’s first 200-yard rusher since 2011.

Green Oaks backup quarterback freshman Keith Baker came in and helped the Giants stay close by completing 16-of-22 passes for 205 yards and had one rushing touchdown.

C. E. Byrd Yellow Jackets 42, Calvary Baptist Cavaliers 32

Byrd overcame the memories of a tragic loss to Calvary Baptist last year by using their rushing attack to squash the Cavaliers. Junior running back Charlie Barham had 148 rushing yards on 21 carries and one touchdown to help lead his team to victory.

Calvary Baptist sophomore quarterback Cade Hart threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns by completing 17-of-28 passes and senior running back Kordavion Washington had 125 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries but unfortunately it was not enough to win their season opener.

Evangel Christian Eagles 14, East St. Louis Flyers (IL) 6

It was a defensive showdown between two very tough teams but Evangel was rewarded for taking the long trip to Illinois with a victory. With both teams locked at 0-0, the Eagles broke through first on a 10-yard run by Tamauge Sloan with 8:48 left in the third quarter. Evangel then scored a second time with 5:57 left in the game on a 34-yard pass from sophomore Blake Shapen to senior Christian Bailiff.

The Flyers were led by senior quarterback Christian Perez who completed 11-of-23 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown.
