We have finally reached the opening weekend of the high school football season in the state of Louisiana. Teams and their fans have been counting down to the first game on the schedule since the 2017 state championship games in early December. Coaches will have their players fired up as teams will kick off their new campaign on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with all seeking a run to the 2018 state title game.

The following is a preview of some of the top games in Louisiana for Week 1.

Bishop Dunne Falcons (TX) at Evangel Christian Academy Eagles

This is a clash between one of the best teams in Texas and one of the best in Louisiana. The stands will be packed on the campus of Evangel Christian Academy as these two titans collide in west Shreveport.

Bishop Dunne is bringing a team full of talent led by safety Brian Williams (Texas A&M commit). Another defensive star for the Falcons is four-star linebacker Brennon Scott who is the No. 17 outside linebacker recruit in the country. A couple players on the Falcons offense to watch will be wide receivers Jabari Khepera and Andrew Armstrong. Bishop Dunne’s offensive line is anchored by three-star senior Chans Jones.

Evangel is kicking off their 30th season of play at home on Friday night and are looking to write another chapter in their rich history. The Eagles are led by junior quarterback Blake Shapen and senior running back Tamauge Sloan. Another offensive star to watch is lineman Christian Perry. Evangel’s smothering defense is led by senior linebacker Na’Drian Dizadare (Oklahoma State commit) and senior defensive tackle Elijah Chatman (SMU commit).

Calvary Baptist Academy Cavaliers at C.E. Byrd Yellow Jackets

Last season opened with a great game between these two squads as Byrd got past Calvary 42-32. This year, Calvary wants revenge. Both teams will give it their all as every team wants to open the season with a win.

Calvary Baptist is led by junior quarterback Cade Hart who threw for 2,470 yards and 29 touchdowns a year ago. Two of his primary weapons are wide receiver Micah Jernigan and running back Isaiah Brown. The Cavaliers defense is led by cornerback Eric Reed Jr. and safety Cameron Thomas.

C.E. Byrd’s offense is led by junior quarterback Cameron Felt and the two-headed running back monster of seniors Charlie Barham and Lawson Jackson. Senior Darin Marshall is another weapon for the Yellow Jackets as he can make plays in the backfield and at wide receiver. Byrd’s Purple Swarm defense is led by defensive lineman Henry Lott, senior linebacker Chondrick Lofton, and safety Avaunte Steward. Lofton had 29 total tackles last year and Steward contributed with 34 stops.

Green Oaks Giants at Captain Shreve Gators

In the only Saturday game in the Shreveport area, 3A Green Oaks will open their new season on the road at 5A Captain Shreve. Green Oaks will be starting their second season under Coach Isaac seeking revenge after falling to the Gators last year.

The Giants are led by sophomore quarterback Keith Baker who showed great poise in his freshman year by throwing for 1,780 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior running back Ja’me Sanders will shine in the backfield after rushing for 592 yards and seven scores last season. Another offensive weapon for Green Oaks is senior Khyrie Poole. Two defensive players to watch includes sophomore defensive lineman Jaden Moore, junior linebacker D’ante Johns and junior defensive back Da’sean Thomas.

Captain Shreve will be led by junior quarterback Darrius Grant and junior running back DJ Fleming. Two other offensive weapons include wide receiver Jaquez Jones and Alex Dean. The Gators defense is led by senior linebacker David Brown IV and cornerback DeAndre Wells. Another playmaker in the secondary is junior safety Malik Carey, Jr.
