After opening the 2015 season with losses to Parkview Baptist and Zachary, Catholic High finished the regular 7-1 with tremendous momentum heading into the playoffs. One of the highlights of the regular season was on Oct. 2 when the Bears traveled to Lafayette to take on Teurlings Catholic. Catholic High ended up winning a hard fought game 28-14 to earn Head Coach Weiner his 300th victory.

In the playoffs, the Bears opened on the road at Brother Martin where they squeaked out a 49-48 victory. Then in the semifinals, Catholic High won at Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport 27-21 in overtime in a come from behind fashion. In the state championship game in New Orleans at the Super Dome, the Bears went up against undefeated Archbishop Rummel and took them down 31-28 to cap off a memorable season.

One of the keys to their success this season was the play of their lockdown defense which only gave up on average 22 points a game. There were several leaders on the defense but one of the talented stars was junior defensive end Robert Square III.

The 6’3”, 230 pound, beast had a phenomenal junior year where he registered 49 total tackles including 11 for a loss and 10 sacks. Square played his best during his team’s playoff run where he came up with key stops for the Bears defense.

The Class of 2017 recruit currently has one college offer and is also receiving interest from several schools including Kansas State, Cincinnati, and Louisiana-Lafayette. So far, the star defensive end has attended a Rivals camp and plans on going to more camps before his senior season to show off his skills.

Square also works hard in the classroom where he has a 2.57 GPA and in the weight room where he has a bench max of 250 pounds.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Robert to talk about his high school career at Catholic High and his recruiting process.

Interview

Robert, what are your thoughts on the 2015 season?

“I feel like we all do it for Coach Water. We got him his 300th win against Teurlings Catholic. We started 0-2 and then got closer as a team and then we had one mindset as a team.”

What are your thoughts on your individual performance in your junior season?

“I feel like I progressed every week. I played my best during the playoffs. I had key tackles and big sacks during those games.”

What are your strengths on the football field?

“I might not be as strong as other people that play my position but I have good technique and speed.”

Do you have any offers?

“I got my first offer from Nichols State last summer.”

Are there any other schools showing you interest that haven’t offered you?

“Kansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Cincinnati, Colorado State, and Jackson State.”

Will you attend any camps this summer?

“I just attended a Rivals camp but I will also be going to a Nike Opening Regional. I really want to get up to Kansas State, and then LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Louisiana-Monroe.”

What is your favorite part about playing football?

“Making plays and enjoying that time with my brothers under the lights. I love the atmosphere and my coaches.”

Who has had the biggest impact on your football career?

“My mom, Tammy Brumfield, and my cousin, Garrett Brumfield. I chose Garrett because he is like my big brother and he has been a mentor in my life. My mom supports me and is always keeping things real and has my back.”

How does Catholic High look going into next season?

“I feel like we look pretty good. We have a lot of guys that can lead the team. We can make some things happen especially on the defensive side of the ball.”

Is there any pressure to win a second straight state title?

“We would like too but there isn’t any pressure. We just want to get through the season and see what happens during playoff time.”

What is your current GPA?

“2.57.”

What is your fastest 40 yard dash time?

“4.95.”

What is your bench max in the weight room?

“250.”

Do you have any personal or team goals going into your senior season?

“My team goal is to lead the defense and help the young freshman get adjusted to the environment and a personal goal is to continue to be a playmaker and make things happen for the team.”

Thank you for your time and good luck in your senior season.

“Thank you.”

  • My name is Shane Evans, I am a law enforcement officer and I have been a youth football coach since I was 18 years old. I have just finished a 10 year stretch of coaching kids in the Central Wildcat Youth Football Organization with a 36-4 record over the last 4 years. I have been truly blessed and fortunate to have met and coached hundreds of kids during the last decade. I am now retired from coaching youth football, and I think I have a good data set to make the following comments. I hope that prospective coaches and recruiters see this.

Trey Square is first, a respectful, faithful, loving, young man. He is devoted to his family and his teammates. He will not behave in a manner that will ever bring disrespect to your program. He is smart. He is loved by all that meet and get to know him. He has been a guest in my own home, and while there, seemed like one of my own sons. He just “fits in” whereever he goes.

Physically, his heritage is tall, strong and sturdy people that carry the same great personality traits that he does. I am no pediatrician, but I expect this young man to have the physical ability and size to play football at whatever level he desires.

Ah, desire. The most important attribute of any athlete. Trey has it. In spades. He has invested many, many hours in agility work above and beyond what is on the “schedule” of any high school program to ensure his ability to have the speed needed to contribute. I consider him one of the most coachable kids I have ever encountered. You know the kind that almost seems like they are trying to read you lips when you are talking to them because they don’t want to miss a thing? Yea, that’s Trey. I was his coach. There is some info that you cannot get from video. He LISTENS. INTENTLY. He applies your coaching immediately and accurately. It soaks in and he gives it back to you with great attention to detail.

For all of his politeness off the field, respect for his elders, coaches and teachers, you may question his on field personality. Make no mistake, he may (much to this Central Wildcats dismay) be a Catholic High Bear, but he is a TIGER when playing defense. He is plugged in where he is needed right now as a 6’3″ defensive end for the Bears, but he is a fearless, smart and EXTREMELY aggressive linebacker as well. He was the tallest kid on the field when he played for the Central Youth Wildcats, but his speed, understanding of his assignments and mental quickness allowed him to play outside linebacker for us and opposing offenses simply did not even attempt to run left when he was at R OLB in a 4-4 defense.

When I think of a player that gets the opportunity to play at the college level, I normally think “what a lucky kid, all his hard work paid off!”.

In Trey’s case, I am thinking “what program will be lucky enough to have Trey Square choose THEM?” This is a zero risk decision for any program. Good luck signing him. God Bless ya Trey. Come visit.
