Written by Charlie Beuttel

Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport has a reputation of being a football powerhouse in northwest Louisiana. The Eagles have won 13 state titles and was the 1999 National High School Champions. In fact in the past 11 seasons Evangel has won five state titles.

In 2014, the Eagles went 8-4 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs where they lost to John Curtis. One of leaders of the team was quarterback Connor Curry who had a great sophomore season throwing for 1,792 yards with 22 passing touchdowns. The 6’2″, 190 pound, leader also received All-District and All-City honorable mention awards after the season.

Evangel is off to a hot start in 2015 as they are 4-1 through their first five games of the season. Curry is having a great junior season so far throwing for 662 yards and six touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback also has the ability to gain yards on the ground covering 184 on 84 carries with two more scores.

During the summer between his sophomore and junior years, Curry attended several college camps and worked hard to improve his throwing motion while gaining exposure in the college ranks.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Connor to talk about his career at Evangel and his recruiting process.

Interview
Connor, your team is off to a 4-1 start what are some keys to your early season success?

“I’d say we are all playing for each other. We’re not overlooking anyone. We could lose any given night and we trust God that he can take care of us in the long run.”

What are your thoughts on your individual performance so far this season?

“There is always something to improve. I just do what the coaches ask me and focus on my assignments and I do whatever it takes to win.”

What would you say are your strengths on the football field?

“I feel like I’ve gotten better in making smarter decisions and I don’t get greedy. I take what the defense gives me. I trust in my teammates.”

How does Evangel look going forward?

“Right now we’re going into district and we’re focused on Southwood this week and we take one week at a time.”

How are you preparing for district play?

“We’re coming out with a great focus on taking care of our job and we don’t want to overlook anyone in the district. We have to be prepared for everyone.”

What games left on the schedule are you most looking forward to playing?

“The Southwood game because it’s homecoming and everyone will be excited for that game.”

Evangel hasn’t lost a home district game in 25 years (1990 vs Plain Dealing). Does that put any extra pressure on you?

“No sir. We don’t think about stuff like that. We just focus on the game and do not add any unnecessary pressure to ourselves.”

What did you work on the most to prepare for your junior season?

“I changed up my throwing motion and form and it helped me a lot.”

What college camps did you attend this past summer?

“Northwestern State, Baylor, Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas.”

“I’ve talked to a lot of coaches but I will wait and see what happens during the offseason.”

Have you gone on or plan on taking any visits?

“I’d really love to go to an Alabama game but I hate to miss practice because we have some practices on Saturdays.”

What kind of feedback have you received from college coaches?

“I received a lot of positive feedback. One coach was impressed with my throwing motion. The feedback has been encouraging.”

What is your favorite part about playing football?

“I really love high school football because I hang out with everyone on the team. It feels like we play as a family and it’s really enjoyable.”

Who has had the biggest impact on your football career?
