When college coaches scout Paraclete High School during the 2017 season there will be a lot of talent on the Spirits’ roster to evaluate. One of the top players on the Lancaster squad who has already provided two years of highlight reel filling plays is Class of 2019 receiver Melquan Stovall.

Stovall emerged as threat during his freshman season making opposing California defenses look silly rushing for 178 yards with a score off 23 carries while pulling in 46 passes for 740 yards with five more scores. Paraclete found their niche at the end of the 2016 season posting a 12-4 record capturing a Division 6 CIF state title with a 39-21 win over Menlo-Atherton. Their 5-9, 162 pound, sophomore talent was key throughout the season securing 42 passes for 535 yards with seven scores.

On Sunday, Feb. 19, Stovall had another chance to showcase his talents against the best of the best at the Under Armour All-American Camp, an invite only event. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Stovall after the camp getting his thoughts on how he performed as one of the few underclassmen in attendance while getting an update on his growing recruiting process.

Interview

Melquan, how did the Under Armour camp go today?

“It went well. I got a lot of experience working with the NFL coaches there. They showed me stuff to do with my routes so I can get better.”

What were some of the things that you learned?

“Getting off the ball, my releases, how to break down routes, and getting out of my breaks quicker.”

How did you do in the one-on ones?

“It went real well. There was a lot of competition out there and I was leaving them behind.”

I know the camp did not share your workout times from the camp but what is the best 40-yard dash you have ran?

“A 4.52. That was last summer.”

What camps are you planning on attending coming up?

“The Nike Opening Regional (LA) and after that I’m going to the Rivals camp. I plan on hitting up a couple of college camps this summer too.”

Which college camps will you possibly attend?

“Washington State, Washington, and I will try to hit all of the camps in the LA area like USC and UCLA.”

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you right now?

“Utah, Boise State, Washington State is showing a lot of interest, and I am getting a little bit of interest from USC and UCLA.”

Do you have any planned visits for the spring or summer?

“I plan on visiting USC, UCLA, both Arizona schools, Stanford, Cal, LSU, Washington, and Washington State.”

How are you preparing for all of the upcoming camps?

“Training and running hills.”

Where all will we see you on the field next season?

“I think we will be throwing the ball more next season. I should be all over the field catching passes and should get some time in at running back. I will be back deep on kickoff and punt return. On defense I will be playing some safety and corner.”

You have a new quarterback on the roster with Brevin White. Have you thrown with him yet?

“Yes. He got here a couple of weeks ago. We have thrown together six or seven times. We worked together at the camp today (Sunday).”

How is that connection looking so far?

“Good. He’s getting the ball there quick. As soon as I am out of my break the ball is there. Our connection is real good.”

Melquan, congratulations on a successful Under Armour camp and good luck with all of the upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
