The Spartans are on a steady track with their 2017 class with 16 verbal commitments but added a key piece to their 2018 class on Friday with a pledge from Ohio four-star athlete Xavier Henderson.

Henderson helped Pickerington High School to an 8-3 run in 2015. The 6-0, 185 pound, wide receiver, cornerback, and kick returner played his way into one of the top then- sophomores in the nation. College coaches came calling with offers from Ole Miss, Kentucky, Iowa State, Eastern Kentucky, Toledo, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, and Boston College.

Off-season visits and camps between Ohio State and Michigan State set up an all-too familiar Big Ten recruiting battle. Henderson put a stop to his recruitment, in theory, posting his commitment on Twitter reading, “Very excited to announce my commitment as a student athlete to Michigan State University! #GoGreen.”

Henderson’s Tigers are off to a 2-0 start to their 2016 season with a 20-14 win over Elder and a 43-0 besting of Independence.

Henderson is the first verbal commitment for Michigan State in the 2018 class. The Ohio standout is capable of playing both sides of the ball at the next level but will more than likely line up at corner in the collegiate ranks.
