Michigan State got their first cornerback commit for the 2017 class on Sunday when Josiah Scott pledged to the Spartans.

Scott (5-9.5, 155) is the go-getter cornerback all college football coaches love. The Fairfield High School standout is a playmaking machine on defense picking off passes, forcing fumbles, and picking up fumbles putting a quick six on the board.

As the Indians went through their 8-3 season in 2015, more and more college coaches starting taking notice of Scott’s abilities. What began as interest during the season quickly became a slew of offers over the spring and summer seeing a reported 13 programs seeking his talents at the next level. The Spartans fought off teams like West Virginia, Pitt, Army, Buffalo, Navy Southern Miss, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, and Iowa for Scott’s commitment.

The speedster with 4.46 speed in the 40-yard dash, posted his commitment on Twitter, “Blessed to announce that I’m officially committed to Michigan State University! #GoGreen #V4MSU.”

The recruiting process between MSU and Scott may have been ongoing but once the two sides got down to business the process went quickly. The Spartans offered Scott on July 19, and then hosted him on an unofficial visit on July 28. Three days later the Ohio native made his commitment public.

MSU now has 16 verbal commitments to their 2017 class. Much of the early work on the recruiting trail has been on the offensive side of the ball with up to 10 players slated to help score the ball. The Spartans have focused on defensive end with up to four players who could rusher the passer once on campus.
