On Wednesday, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced the new alignments for five divisions within the Los Angeles area. The big change puts the 2016 Division II Championship Game contenders, Los Angeles High School and Hawkins, into Division I to face stalwarts like Narbonne and Dorsey making a crowded bracket even more competitive.

Hawkins posted a 13-1 season in 2016 with Los Angeles going 11-4 meeting in the CIFLACS with the Hawks taking home the hardware after winning 36-6. Hawkins was so bullish in 2016, they even took out Dorsey 24-21 and even gave Mater Dei, the end of season No. 3 ranked MaxPreps team in the nation, a run before falling 51-42.

In the Division I ranks, the Dons finished their season 11-3 squaring off against Narbonne in the title game. The Gauchos proved to be one of California’s best running a record of 14-1 with their 42-34 win over the Dons before losing 35-28 in the CIF State Football Championship to Cathedral Catholic (San Diego).

Other Division II playoff teams from 2016 to make the jump up includes Canoga Park, Grant, Fairfax, and Westchester. Now all that talent is focused in the Division I arena entering the 2017 season. The Division II ranks are not depleted of talent with 2016 playoff teams like Cleveland and Chatsworth still there to slug it out with the best of the best.
