As a player, if you are going to take your first opportunity for varsity action – take it by the horns and make the most of it. That is exactly what Avery Davis did, except he took it by the Longhorns. The Class of 2017 dual-threat quarterback had a dynamic junior season leading to double-digit offers from top programs around the country. On Saturday, all that hard work and exciting play culminated when the Cedar Hill High School 4-star talent verbally committed to Notre Dame potentially setting a new path forward for Fighting Irish football.

Davis was a dynamic playmaker for the Cedar Hill Longhorns in 2015 passing for 2,148 yards with 25 touchdowns against just four picks and rushed for 873 yards with 13 scores. Cedar Hill posted a 9-2 mark with Davis leading the way falling 37-33 to Carroll High School in the Texas High School Playoffs.

The announcement went public when Davis posted his decision to Twitter writing, “After endless prayer, talking to my family, & my coaches I have decided to officially verbally commit to The University of Notre Dame! I would like to thank all of the colleges who took a chance and recruited me to play for their school & I’d also like to thank all of the colleges who chose not too [sic]. All of the glory is to God because without him I am nothing! #goirish.”

Davis has 12 reported Division-I offers with schools like Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, Tulsa, Utah State, Virginia, Tulane, SMU, Texas Tech, Utah, North Texas, Purdue, Oregon State, and Iowa State extending offers. The 5-11, 192 pound, talent may have been taking a shot at a couple of regional schools that showed interest but did not offer: Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Fighting Irish is off to a solid start to their 2017 recruiting class with four of the five verbal commitments rated as 4-star recruits with Dillan Gibbons rated as a 3-star. The focus so far has been on offense with all five slated to help score the ball at the next level.

The addition of Davis may signal a new offensive approach for Notre Dame. In the 2016 recruiting class, the Irish took pro-style quarterback Ian Book (El Dorado Hills, CA). With Davis being a dual-threat, maybe Notre Dame is looking to open up the offense more in years to come.
