Offseason catch up interview with Class of 2016 San Juan Hills DE/LB Tim Newman

Written by Ryan Wright

When the 2015 season kicks off this fall San Juan Hills defensive end/linebacker Tim Newman will be one to watch. On the edge, up the middle, or sideline to sideline, this 6’2”, 230 pound, athlete is there.

During his junior season he came up with 81 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, and a team leading 14 quarterback hurries. Flashing his athleticism he also lined up some at fullback and tight end catching two passes for 14 yards with one touchdown.

The summer camp circuit is important for all high school football players giving college coaches a hands on opportunity to work with recruits seeing if the tape lies, getting an idea about the coach ability of a prospect, and the personality of said player. Newman took advantage of several camps and like most Class of 2016 recruits is in a wait and see mode heading into the season.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview I sat down with Tim to get an update on his camp circuit and find out where his recruiting is heading going into his senior year.

Tim, jumping right into it, which one-day college camps did you attend this summer?

“I went to Colorado State, Michigan, Arizona, San Jose State, Stanford, (Cal) Berkeley, and I’m missing one more, San Diego State.”

How did the Stanford camp go for you?

“It went pretty well. It was a full pads camp and went over two days. It was a lot of work but it went well. I got to bang heads. Seemed like the coaches liked me. The linebackers coach, Coach (Peter) Hansen, followed up with me on Twitter after. He said he really liked me. I did some pass rush stuff, at all of these camps I played linebacker because that’s what I feel like I will be playing in college, but I did really well pass rushing against fullbacks and all the other stuff as well.”

Did you get pulled aside while you were there having one-on-one conversation with coaches while at the camp?

“Yeah, I talked to him a little bit and then there were a lot of other schools there. Dartmouth, I talked to them. Cal Poly was there, I talked to them after as well. One small school from Kentucky was there but I was not sure who they were.”

Just to kind of sum everything up, you’re in a wait and see stance with Stanford until after the dead period?

“Yeah, he was saying that they still have to watch everything because they filmed everything. So they’re still going through all the film. He was saying he liked what I did. That’s mostly what I got from them.”

How did the Michigan camp go?

“That one was good. That was super tiring though. That was like a good 2.5 hours of straight drills. I think I did really well. Both the coaches from Michigan that were there, coaching all of us, they both said I did really well at the end. They were saying good job and stuff like that, so that was good. I talked a little bit with one of their defensive assistants that was there. He hit me up on Twitter saying he liked what I did. He wants to see more film of me at linebacker this year.”

How did the Cal-Berkeley camp go for you?

“All the things that I did, I did really well. During the 7×7 I felt like I did good. That was the first camp where I talked to the linebacker coach after and got some good feedback from them. As I was walking to go home an assistant coach and Coach (Sonny) Dykes said I did really well. That was the first time at a camp the head coach came up to me and said I did a good job.”

When we last spoke Dartmouth, Brown, UC Davis, Montana, Montana State, Cal Poly, USD, and Northern Arizona where all showing interest in you. Which schools are showing interest in you right now heading out of the dead period?

“A lot through Twitter. I got a few more Ivys through Twitter but I did not go out to their camps. I got a lot of interest from USD (University of San Diego). I’m going there on an unofficial visit tomorrow. Hopefully that goes well. I’m not sure what to expect from that. I’ve been talking to San Jose State a bit.”

Who are you meeting with at USD tomorrow?

“Meeting with Tanner Engstrand (offensive coordinator), he’s the recruiting coordinator in our recruiting area. That’s who I’ve been talking to. He’s bringing a defensive coach or the coordinator with me on the tour. I have to call him today. Hopefully he’ll bring defensive coordinator Steven Irvin.”

Any other camps coming up for you?

“No, that was all of them.”

What else have you been doing in the offseason to prepare for all of these camps and your senior season?

“I still go to my training facility called Sports Science Lab. It’s local and really nice. I’ve been working on explosiveness, footwork, my hips, and agility. I workout at my school and after that I usually get all the linebackers and we do some conditioning on the side.”

What day do the Stallions report back on the field for fall camp that will carry you into the season?

“Right now we are on a break but we start back up on Monday the 13th.”

Are you excited to get back on the field?

“Yeah definitely, I’m ready to get started already it feels like it’s been forever.”

Good luck this season.

“Thank you.”
