High school football fans in the state of Arkansas, get ready to take notice Class of 2023 receiver/defensive back Cory Henderson Jr. Henderson spent the 2019 season with North Little Rock and the 2020 campaign at Jacksonville High School after his family moved. A wrist injury limited his action on the field during his sophomore run, but the 6-1, 175-pound, rising talent showed snippets of the coming attractions while drawing recruiting interest from programs like Columbia and Hendrix. When the lights turn on for the 2021 schedule, Henderson will be back with the Charging Wildcats seeking to put North Little Rock back atop the 7A ranks.

Taking his first visit to the RNG Lab, Henderson covers ground on his play during the 2020 season and how he is preparing for dual-roles this fall.

Interview

Cory, how did the 2020 season go for you on the field?

It was good. I played on both sides and was getting more comfortable playing defense as an offensive player. During the season I got more comfortable playing corner.

Where all did the coaches have you lining up?

Receiver, corner, running back, free safety, and kick returner.

What offensive set were you guys running and what were some of the routes within the scheme you were executing?

We ran 11 personnel and sometimes in the wishbone. The routes were whips, wheels, a lot of slants and posts.

On defense, what coverages were you guys running?

Cover 2 and man mostly.

Playing both ways, how has that helped you develop your skills as both a receiver and defensive back?

It helped me a lot. It lets me know what’s going on inside the head of the receiver. If he is lined up inside, I know he is about to run a slant. If he is looking up field, he’s running a post or go route.

With your play on offense, what are the key traits to your game you are working on for the 2021 season?

I am mostly working on getting stronger and quicker. I am working on my routes, catching, and getting better on my option routes.

And on defense?

Mostly man. Cover 2 is my favorite, but I am getting better at man.

What are you doing for speed and agility training?

Ladder drills, running hills, and working with my trainer Ricky. He helps me with all that. He is really good at it.

What was the last 40-yard dash time you posted?

At the last camp I attended I ran a 4.6.

Are you playing 7v7 this spring?

Yes, sir. For Arkansas Elite Triple J.

How have the tournaments gone for you personally?

We had our first in tournament in Dallas, it turned out well. It was good and the competition was hot. It made me better. I had a good time there.

Do you have any tournaments coming up?

We have one in New Orleans this weekend. After that, we have one in town on May 2 and one in Hoover (AL) in May.

Are you competing in any other varsity sports?

Yes, I run track.

Which events?

I run the 100, 4×2, and 4×4.

What is your PR in the 100?

An 11.24.

Are there any camps you may attend this spring or summer?

I am looking at a UCA camp and I will try to get to Arkansas (Razorbacks) if they have one.

Cory, I appreciate your time today. Wishing you success at the 7v7 tournaments and with the upcoming camps.

Thank you, sir.
