The quarterback of the future has arrived on Upland’s High School roster, one that can help the Highlanders rack up Baseline League titles for the next four years in Rahim Wright. The Class of 2024 rising star has taken advantage of the extended California offseason to fine-tune his mechanics and overall skills all while pushing his knowledge of the game forward. The deep plunge into Upland’s playbook mixed with the abilities has helped Wright (5-11, 155) claim the team’s starting quarterback position. Based on Wright’s play on the 7v7 circuit with Rharebreed, the future is very bright for the Highlanders.

In an RNG first-look interview, Wright rolled by the Lab before taking off to Nevada covering ground on his workouts and the QB competition at Upland.

Interview

Rahim, even with a potential high school season coming up, the offseason in California is in full swing. Are you playing 7v7 ball? If so, with which team?

Yes, with Rharebreed.

How has the 7v7 season gone for you and the team so far?

I feel like it has gone well. In our last two tournaments, we went to the semifinals and the championship.

Nice. Do you have any upcoming tournaments?

Yes, we have one this weekend. We are leaving today (Friday) for Arizona. I think it is Pylon this weekend and next weekend is Houston.

Getting the reps against high school level competition, how is the quick pace of the game helping sharpen your skills as a passing quarterback?

I’ve been working on my reads. Playing 7v7 is helping me speed up my reads and get my timing down with the receivers. I am making sure I am making the right reads and my footwork correct is correct playing with Rharebreed.

What have you been working on this offseason to prepare for varsity ball?

I have been working on my speed, strength, and conditioning. With my mechanics, I have been working with my throwing motion.

How are your personal workouts coming along?

I feel like I am becoming more accurate, generating more power, and going through progressions easier.

What kind of training have you been doing to prepare your body for the next season?

Before we started practicing, I was doing speed training with Rharebreed. We did a summer camp kind of thing going to the mountains and running hills. I have also been lifting weights with Rharebreed in Upland.

When you lace them up with a high school team, which team will you be playing for?

Upland High School.

When the 2020 season gets going, are you playing with Upland?

Yes, I am.

What style of offense does Upland run?

We are doing under center and Spread. We have a lot of different personnel and we are doing a lot of different stuff.

How does that scheme fit your skills?

I feel like it fits perfectly. When I came in, I had to get used to it. I really focused on the plays because I was fighting for the starting spot. I had to outwork the other QBs.

How did the QB competition go?

I feel like I did everything I could to win the starting spot, which I have right now. Now, I am trying to maintain that spot.

Rahim, it was great getting time in with you today. Congratulations on earning the starting spot and good luck the next couple of weekends with the 7v7 tournaments.

Thank you, sir.
