NORTH PORT, Fla. – Times are changing at North Port High School (Fla.), and for the better. The Bobcats’ program is making that turn under head coach Garon Belser, and it will only succeed with guys like Isaac Smith’s dedication. The Class of 2025 prospect laced up the cleats at running back and linebacker a year ago and will take on the same roles this fall ready to draw the recruiting spotlight along the way.

As a sophomore, Smith (5-10, 190) led North Port in rushing and was second on the team in tackles. The grind this offseason out of the backfield was detailed.

“I’ve been working to be more agile and faster, and faster with my cuts,” Smith said. “As a power back, which is what I’ve always been, I’m getting stronger and working on my speed to break those long runs.”

Hours of work have been put into his game as a defender as well.

“I have been working on reading keys off the guards, making sure I know my keys better from run and pass, working on my drops, and making big hits,” Smith stated.

To help develop his craft, and get in front of college coaches, Smith competed at three camps this summer.

“I went to a STU (St. Thomas University) camp, an FSU camp in Tallahassee, and a Miami camp,” Smith shared.

Competing at running back and linebacker at the camps, Smith felt he performed his best at the STU event, but the Hurricanes saw something in Smith that is worth noting.

“At the Miami and FSU camp I was pulled aside,” Smith said. “One of the coaches at Miami said I have good hands and that I can catch; we were running routes on air. He said I could come to his school to play running back and slot.”

North Port opens their 2023 season on Friday, Aug. 25, against Parrish Community.
