So it seems, there is never a shortage of elite quarterbacks coming off California high school gridirons. Year after year, the Golden State produces some of the best gunslingers in the country with a long list of aspiring young field generals working their way to local glory and collegiate recognition. One player determined to be on the list of recruiting boards across the country when his time comes is Class of 2021 Loyola High School rising star Finn Collins. The 6-1, 160-pound, spinner of the pigskin is well on his way in attracting college scouts while working his way to the Cubs’ varsity level.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Collins for a quick one-on-one going over his offseason workouts, spring and summer practices with Loyola, and his ambitious college camp circuit.

Interview

Finn, how did your overall freshman season go in the pocket?

“It was good. It was good getting used to the feel of the offense – last year was the first year having the offense to myself. I split time at quarterback in Pop Warner. It was nice getting that feel and learning how to read defenses better.”

It looks like you ran a lot of the offense out of the shotgun, in the spread. How does the spread offense fit your skillset?

“I am more of a pocket passer. I like putting the ball where it needs to be and spreading it out to my receivers.”

What have you been working on with your game this offseason?

“This offseason, I have been working on a quicker release and getting bigger, stronger, and faster.”

Which quarterback coach have you been working with this spring and summer?

“Sam Fisher, I have worked with him for a long time.”

What is the focus of your workouts with your Coach Fisher?

“We do a lot of speed work. We work on ball placement and timing. We have been working on keeping everything smooth and quickening everything up.”

Where are you seeing the biggest gains in your abilities this spring and summer?

“I am improving on getting the ball out quick, putting it where it needs to be, and getting used to the pocket. My pocket mobility has improved a lot.”

How have spring and summer practices gone with Loyola?

“Good. We’ve been in the weight room just about every day. We are installing a lot of our offense.”

What adjustments are you having to make to your game going against varsity level guys in practice?

“It has been a good challenge for me in practice. I am building chemistry with my teammates and getting used to a faster feel for the game. There is a lot of extra stuff to take in – it is certainly faster.”

Are you in a battle on the Cubs roster at quarterback?

“Yes. There is a senior that will probably start and two juniors in front of me. I look forward to battling for reps this season throughout our summer practices.”

Have you taken your skills to a challenge at any camps this offseason?

“Yes. I have attended camps at Washington, Cal, the UCLA Elite, Redlands, La Vern, and Cal-Lutheran.”

How did the UCLA camp go?

“It was good. It was a fun camp. We got down to work at that camp.”

How did the Cal camp go?

“That was a good camp as well. There were a lot of guys there, a lot of good competition.”

Of all the camps, which did you turn in your best performance?

“I did my best at the Washington and the Redlands camps.”

What did you do well at the Washington camp?

“They liked how well I threw the ball. It was a two-day camp, so they got a lot of opportunities to see me throw. That was my first time showing their coaches what I can do. I think they got the feel for what I can do.”

I know it is very early for you, but are any schools showing recruiting interest?

“Yes. Washington and Oregon State are showing interest.”

Nice. Last couple of questions. What do you love about playing football?

“I love throwing touchdowns, celebrating touchdowns with my guys, and celebrating a good win.”

What goals have you set for your sophomore season?

“My goal is to get some varsity reps and learn the new offense to be ready for my junior year.”

What are you doing this summer away from football for fun?

“Hanging out with friends, going to the beach, and working out.”

Finn, thanks for your time today and good luck with fall practices.

“Thank you.”
