The Panthers added their 19th verbal commit to their 2017 recruiting class on Thursday heading into the Lakeland area for three-star cornerback Damarri Mathis.

Over the past two seasons, Mathis (5-11, 175) has helped his Lakeland High School squad to a 9-3 and 8-3 finish locking down opposing Florida 7A competition. While helping the Dreadnaughts be one of the top teams in Florida, Mathis was gaining scholarship offers from up and down the east coast. His offer total was in the neighborhood of 20 when he committed to Pitt.

The Panthers offered Mathis on June 7 and remained undeterred on their target even after he committed to South Carolina on June 17. Pitt’s coaching staff continued to recruit Mathis eventually gaining a decommitment from South Carolina on Nov. 28, the same day the staff did an in-home visit. Pitt hosted Mathis on Dec. 9 publically landing their guy on Dec. 22.

Mathis posted his decision on Twitter with a statement reading:

247Sports rates Pitt’s 2017 recruiting class No. 32 in the nation, No. 7 overall in the ACC with two four-star recruits, safety Paris Ford and running back Todd Sibley, and 15 three-star players. Rivals has the current haul at No. 37.
