The 2015 season for Salesian High School in many ways was a building block year setting up for a potentially explosive 2016 campaign. The Mustangs were a young team, especially at key positions on offense, but a very talented team. Among the many young talents was Class of 2017 quarterback Robbie Blosser.

Blosser transferred from Venice High School (2014) to Salesian and then worked a quick connection with his receivers in a new offense for 2,131 yards with 18 touchdowns hitting 67 percent of his passes. He also showed he has some ground speed when needed rushing eight times for 45 yards with a score.

Going into the 2016 season, Blosser will have a lot of fellow senior talent around him including 4-star all-purpose back/cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, scat-back/slot receiver Urael Blackshear, and wide receivers Nicholas Pickett and Tysean Prysock. On the other side of the ball, the defense will be salty with UCLA linebacker commit Rahyme Johnson (6-4, 200) stopping opposing offenses.

Colleges have shown a lot of interest in Blosser. The 6’2”, 195 pound, gunslinger already has an offer from North Texas and has UCLA, Texas Tech, Tennessee, SMU, San Diego State, Boise State, and Baylor all keeping a close eye on the Los Angeles area recruit. Blosser has a full offseason with his skill players to further make that on the field connection and an entire camp circuit to showcase his skill sets for opportunities to draw more interest and more offers.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Blosser to cover his junior season, his offseason schedule, and received a recruiting news update.

Interview

Robbie, you were able to show off your abilities in the pocket last year with the Mustangs spreading the ball all over the field. What are your strengths on the field as a quarterback at this point in your high school career?

“One of my strengths is my footwork. I’m good at tying it with reading the defense. When I drop back, by my fifth or seventh step I know where I am going with the ball. I’m working on getting the ball out quicker. I’m also working on hitting the skinny post off five steps based on a Cover 2 and Cover 3. I’ve worked really hard on improving how I read defenses. I’m always working on my footwork.”

What else are you working on this offseason?

“That’s really about it. I’m working on my reads, getting bigger, faster, and stronger. I’m getting stronger with the playbook and building better chemistry with my receivers going into next season.”

What are your goals for the 2016 football season?

“My goal for the season is to win state. I want us to win every game we can and be the best teammate I can be.”

Any personal goals?

“Throw for a lot of touchdowns. I want over 45 touchdowns and 5,000 yards passing.”

Going big, I like it. Did you earn any individual awards at the end of last season?

“I got a team Offensive Player of the Year MVP and I was first team All-League.”

What camps are you planning on attending this offseason?

“I plan on going to the Cal, Stanford, Northwestern, Vandy (Vanderbilt), SDSU (San Diego State), North Texas – they offered me a month ago, so I’m going there, Duke, and I think that’s it.”

Are you going to any exposure camps?

“I’m going to the Elite 11 in Oakland. I’m most likely going to the one in New Orleans as well.”

How did the offer from North Texas come to you?

“My private quarterback coach (Jo Dickinson – training based in Oklahoma) told me Seth Littrell (North Texas head coach) really liked me. They reached out to me. I knew Coach (Graham) Harrell (offensive coordinator) from Washington State. They saw my highlight tape and wanted to offer me. They want to see me throw in the summer so that is why I plan on going to North Texas (camp).”

Do you have any other unofficial visits set up?

“I went to UCLA two weeks ago, my unofficial to North Texas, and I plan on going to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State coming up – maybe in a week or two.”

How did your visit to UCLA go?

“It went really well. I was talking to Coach (Kennedy) Polamalu (offensive coordinator), Coach (Rip) Scherer (associate head coach/tight ends), and Coach (Marques) Tuiasosopo (quarterbacks coach).”

What did you talk about with the coaching staff at UCLA?

“We talked about the recruiting process and where I am at on their board. They said they have a quarterback there now. They said they think I’m a really good quarterback and if anything changes they would offer me.”

When you have talked to the various college coaches, what are they telling you they like about your game?

“Northwestern, Vandy, and SDSU like my footwork. They said I’m really good at throwing my deep ball and being able to read the defense. They like that I see where my receivers are through my progressions, stuff like that. They also like the academic side – I have a 4.0 GPA.”

What is your time frame on making a verbal commitment? Have you started thinking about that yet?

“I think I will wait until singing day to choose a school. I plan on waiting out the season and see what happens after that.”

Have you taken the ACT or SAT yet?

“No, not yet. I’ve taken the practice exams. I’m taking my first test in May.”

What is your favorite subject in school?

“I like my honors chemistry class.”

Have you thought about what you want to major in while in college?

“Economics.”

Are you playing any spring sports for Salesian?

“No, I’m just training, playing 7×7 (Rise Up), and working out.”

How is your 7×7 season going so far?

“Our 7×7 team won two big tournaments. We won the Kings of the IE (Inland Empire) 7×7 against 40 teams that were there and we won a Pylon Tournament in Fontana before Vegas. We got to the final 16 teams in Vegas.”

Who are some of the guys that you are passing to on your 7×7 Rise Up team?

Jamire Calvin (Cathedral) is on there. Johnny Johnson, he’s a wide receiver at Salesian. No one knows about him yet. He’s a slot receiver, he came from Chaminade. He’s really good.”

Is there a NFL player you model your game after or at least like to watch to see how they control the game?

“I think mostly Ben Roethlisberger. I like how tough he is. I think the No. 1 thing as a quarterback is to be there for your team no matter what is going on. If he gets hit hard, sacked five times, or whatever, he keeps coming back. I love about him.”

Who has made the biggest impact on your football career?

“I think my coach Travis Hannah. He’s been coaching me since Pop Warner. He was a wide receiver at USC. He has been my agility and speed coach for years and he helps out at Salesian.”

Robbie, thanks for your time today. Good luck with your upcoming visits to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and North Texas.

“Thank you.”
