The Jim Harbaugh freight train that has rolled through college football over the last year may have hit a slight bump on Friday with the report that Michigan’s recruiting coordinator Matt Doherty was returning to the Miami Hurricanes to fill the same role in south Florida.

Doherty spent the last year helping Michigan put together a Top 5 recruiting class with 28 overall signees that included the No. 1 player in the nation, 5-star New Jersey defensive tackle Rashan Gary. The class excelled beyond Gary with 15 players ranked as 4-stars and 12 slotted as 3-star recruits. The class covered 14 different states including Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Indiana, Alabama, and California.

The Hurricanes brought Doherty back to Miami where he spent the 2014 season as director of player personnel. Doherty got a job out of college, graduating from Miami, working as a scouting assistant with the New England Patriots in 2009-10.

One could make the argument that the Hurricanes may have underperformed in Mark Richt’s first recruiting class in Miami. South Florida is talent rich and Richt has a winning pedigree coming from Georgia with years spent recruiting the state of Florida. The Hurricanes signed 18 players to the 2016 recruiting class with seven ranked as 4-star players and 10 as 3-stars.
