Saint Anthony’s High School is finally starting to click on all cylinders. The Saints started the season off 1-2 but are on a two-game winning streak with the team back to full strength with everyone healthy. One of the main headline grabbers for the Saints is two-way star Logan Gamble.

Gamble (6’5.5”, 198) is a terror on both sides of the field lining up at wide receiver and defensive end. Athletic, smart, and determined, Gamble enjoys frustrating opposing coordinators on both sides of the ball because of the match-up problems he creates. A linebacker might be close to his height but cannot keep up with him in the open field and all other secondary players are too short to defend jump ball passes anywhere on the field. On defense, Gamble is too fast for most tackles to get a good punch on him allowing the speedster free rental space in the opposition’s backfield as desired.

College recruiters have been aware of Gamble’s abilities since his junior season. Offers came in from schools like Arizona, Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State, Virginia, Washington State, and Wyoming but Cal was his top choice. Reported offers for Gamble are 10 but he has six that have not been made public.

The Class of 2016 Golden Bears commit went to Cal-Berkeley for the Washington State game over the weekend. Fresh off his unofficial I sat down with Logan to get an update on his season and find out how his visit went.

Interview

Logan, how is Saint Anthony’s looking now that you guys are on a two-game win streak? Are you guys starting to gel?

“First game of the season (Vasquez, won 32-7) we started off great. We had a great game and a good win. We had a player get hurt in that game so we were not as strong in the secondary after that. Then we played Wilson. That was a really good game. We should have won that game (lost 54-39) but another player got hurt. Then we played Mission Prep on the road. We were just not ready for them and we did not play well (lost 36-20). Then against Marina we had everyone back and healthy. We were ready to play that game and got that win (55-28). We got another win on Friday (Valley Christian 20-17) because everyone was healthy and ready to go. They were some hard fought games.”

How is the team looking now? You have a couple of your players back, is the team looking good?

“Yeah, we’re looking great actually. Everyone is healthy, we have some transfers that are in, the coaches are doing what they need to do, and the captains are doing what they need to do, and everybody is pitching in to make this season workout the right way.”

How has your season gone so far?

“Absolutely great. The first two games I had 16 catches and over 300 yards. In the third and fourth that kind of slowed down because we focused on the run. Both of those were away games. In away games you run the ball more than you pass. On Friday night I had 8 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. But yeah, the season is going great. Defensively and offensively I’m playing every play of the game. At the end of the game I’m not really tired. I have a good motor. The offseason has really helped me get ready for this year.”

I know you’re going to Cal as a wide receiver but you’ve been getting after it on defense too. Talk to me a little bit about your season on that side of the ball.

“Defensively, I know I defense I control what I produce. On offense it is up to the quarterback to throw me the ball. On defense you produce your stats and you produce your own success. When offense is going that well I really turn it on with my defense. I get after it. This year, I’m a straight pass rusher. I’m not really worried about the run. I’m just going after the quarterback and playing in the backfield as much as I can. They’re starting to put me in at outside linebacker and drop me into coverage.”

Do you know your defensive stat line?

“I know I have over 10 sacks already, an interception, and I have about 15 quarterback hurries, and somewhere around 30-40 tackles.”

Looking ahead on the schedule, are there any games left that you are excited to play?

“League is starting, so we have homecoming. The team (Bosco Tech) that we play we blew them out last year. We’re really just trying to stay healthy for the rest of the year and get ready for the playoffs.”

You were at Cal for the Washington State game, how did the visit go?

“It went great. I went with my two sisters, my step dad, my mom, and my girlfriend. We watched the game and then after the game we went onto the field. From the field I went into the locker room for the post-game celebration. Then we all met back at the coaches’ lobby. We hung out there and they met all the coaches.”

What was the experience like for you as a recruit seeing the success of the team in person?

“I had never been to a Cal game. I had never seen them play. It was pretty awesome to see them play at Cal and to see all the people that show up for the games and to see all the people that are excited about Cal this year. I’m excited to be a part of that program.”

Was there anything that made you more excited about your commit to Cal than before your visit?

“The guys on the team, all the players, and coaches, there treated me like I was there to be part of it and not just there to watch the game. I’m sure most schools don’t do that. Some of the schools just try to treat you as a recruit. Since I am a commit they let me go into the locker room.”

Was that visit an official or an unofficial?

“No, that was an unofficial.”

When are you going back up there for your official?

“I’m probably going to take my official during basketball season with all the other commits.”

Will you make another unofficial at Berkeley?

“Yeah, I’m sure I will. I haven’t planned. I wanted to do the USC game but I don’t think that will work out. I don’t know but I’ll figure it out.”

Are you going to the Cal vs. UCLA game in LA?

“Yeah, I’ll be at that one.”

Did you talk to any recruits while you were there to try to sway them towards committing to Cal?

“Wyatt Davis out of St. John Bosco, he’s a Class of 2017 guy, and a 5-star wide receiver.”

How did that go?

“It went really well. Wyatt has a brother on the team. He seemed pretty excited about Cal. We discussed the possibilities of him coming to Cal.”

Did you tour any areas of the campus or facilities while you were there with all of the students on campus?

“We actually didn’t do that as much as we had planned on it. We did walk around the campus for a while.”

Who were some of the other Cal commits that were there with you?

“Traveon Beck (DB – St. John Bosco), Max Gilliam (QB – Thousand Oaks), and Zion Echols (ATH – Charter Oak).”

Any new recruiting news with you? Are there any new schools coming after you?

“I’m up to 16 offers now but I don’t really consider them offers though because I’m 100 percent committed to Cal. I have not gone public with the offers.”
