Saint John Bosco is at it again jumping out to a 5-0 start. The Braves are stacked with talent, like they have been the last three season, but one familiar thread from Bosco’s 2013 California state championship and national championship team, their 2014 California semifinalist squad, and this year’s state and national title contenders is offensive tackle Joe Murphy.

Murphy, 6’5”, 310 pounds, was on the two-deep as a sophomore for the Bellflower, California squad in 2013 and is now a two-year starter playing against some of the best competition in the nation. In five games the Braves have already passed for 1,296 yards behind senior quarterback Quentin Davis and rushed for 1,419 yards thanks in large part to senior running back Sean McGrew.

The Braves have already taken on in-state squads La Mirada winning 76-8, Norwalk winning 67-7, and Crespi coming out on top 55-7. Being national title contenders in today’s high school football a team has to play against top competition from around the nation much like college football teams. Proving their worth the Braves have knocked off Oregon perennial powerhouse Central Catholic (Portland) 66-17 on the road and New Jersey powerhouse St. Peter’s Prep 56-14, also on the road.

Through the first five games opening up holes for the running game and keeping Davis jersey clean in the passing attack has been Murphy. The task for Murphy and company will continue with upcoming games against Santa Margarita, Mater Dei, JSerra Catholic, Orange Lutheran, and Servite.
