Over the last three seasons, fans buying a ticket to a Sultana High School (Hesperia, Cali.) football game were in for a treat. The play of LaMason Waller forces fans out of their seats with hands brought together giving thunderous applause with their jaws dropped every Friday night. The Class of 2025 four-star receiver is a true athlete generating nearly 50 scholarship offers. The difference maker is wide open in his recruitment but is focusing down on a few early favorites to learn more about the program in the new year.

Waller (6-2, 170) jumped on the college football recruiting scene as a freshman showing glimpses of things to come. The Sultans got 35 receptions covering 485 yards with four touchdowns and 60 rush yards off five totes in 2021.

The jump came as a do-all sophomore impacting the game in all three phases. The stat sheet is incredible posting 64 receptions for 1,057 yards with 15 scores while carrying the rock 17 times for 151 more yards with two more trips into the end zone. Rounding out the 2022 season, Waller had 36 tackles, 26 solo, with two picks and two fumble recoveries. He also took back eight kicks for 245 yards and a punt for 22.

The focus in 2023 was on offense putting up similar numbers even with defenses scheming to stop him: 62 receptions, 948 yards, and 12 touchdowns; 21 carries for 108 yards with three touchdowns.

“Our offense is a Spread – we are a pass first team,” Waller said. ” My QB and I, our connection is insane. We’ve been playing together since the sixth grade. He can throw it with his eyes closed and I will go get it.”

Asked what he feels are the strengths to his game, the answer may surprise you.

“I think that I can block really well,” Waller stated. “I can stretch the field, even though I am not a speedy receiver, and I can get contested balls; that is my specialty.”

Waller spoke about one of his standout performances of the season against Riverside-Poly.

“Definitely Riverside-Poly, that was my best game,” Waller shared. “I had five touchdowns on nine catches (176 yards), and I did a great job blocking too. I was killing it, but you can see I am not selfish.”

Also suiting up for Sultana in basketball and track competing in the 400, 200, and 4×1 relay, the 48-offer prospect will get out this offseason on the 7-on-7 circuit.

“I will play with Hell Star and some with the Trillion Boys,” Waller stated.

Mixed in between all the athletic events, Waller will begin to weed out the contenders and pretenders.

“I pretty much have everything, I am narrowing it down now,” Waller said.

Waller continued, “Tennessee is reaching out. I talk to coach (Josh) Heupel every morning. Colorado, Stanford, Washington, Arizona – there are so many schools reaching out, but those schools are the ones I have the best talks with coaches. I have a really good bond with coach Heupel.”

Two game-day visits were taken this fall.

“I went to the South Carolina vs. Tennessee game and to the Oregon State vs. Colorado game,” Waller shared.

The stops to both programs were covered.

Tennessee: “It was amazing. When I went out there, I think it was homecoming, the crowd was electric. Tennessee’s coaches showed so much love. There is nothing like Tennessee.”

Colorado: “That was a really good visit too. I spent a lot of time with coach (Brett) Bartolone (WR). I have been there seven times; it was a fun visit. My whole family got to meet with coach Bartolone as well.”

The next round of trips will send Waller all around the country.

“I don’t have any visits set right now, but I know I want to get to Penn State and back to Washington,” Waller said. “There are a couple schools I want to get to, but nothing is set. I want to get back to Tennessee as well. I need to get out to Maryland too. I got to get to College Park. Louisville too. They call me a lot. I got to get to those schools before I commit or make anything happen.”

On the draw to visit the Terrapins, Waller replied, “I have a really good bond with the coaching staff. They have been on me since my freshman year. They are on me every day. I talk to two of Maryland’s coaches each week. I am all about building bonds.”
