When the 2015 season had come to an end, Lake Travis High School was among the best teams in the nation running their record to 15-1 before falling 34-7 in the championship game to Katy High School. That on the field success has brought a lot of attention to the 2017 recruiting class and SMU is one of the many seeking to pull talent from the roster for their program.

On Wednesday the Mustangs secured a commitment from under the radar tight end Cade Brewer.

Brewer (6-3, 223) jumped on the recruiting scene after securing 51 receptions for 813 yards with 14 touchdowns during his junior season. Teams extending offers to the Austin area talent includes Texas-San Antonio, North Texas, Louisiana-Monroe, Texas State, and Bowling Green.

The commitment went public via a post on Twitter reading, “First off, I want to thank God and my family and friends that have supported me through this process. To all the college coaches that went out of their way to recruit me. Also to every coach that has coached me throughout my career, especially my high school coaches that have put me in the best situation to accomplish my dreams of getting to the next level. After much thought and consideration I have decided to continue my academic and football career at Southern Methodist University!!! #ponyup.”

Brewer is the fourth Class of 2017 Lake Travis player to verbally commit to a Division-I school joining offensive lineman Brenden Jaimes (Nebraska), wide receiver Cade Green (Wisconsin), and defensive back Austin Hiller (Northwestern).

SMU had been hot on the recruiting trail through March and April but suffered a couple of setbacks when wide receiver Trestan Ebner decommitted (undecided) and offensive lineman Carson Green flipped his commitment to Texas A&M. The Mustangs now have four verbal commitments to their 2017 class highlighted by 4-star offensive lineman Alan Ali.
