One can guess that when other running backs ask Sevion Morrison about his junior season at a national camp, they are first in shock and then immediately regret doing so in comparison. The 6-0, 196-pound, speed burning all-purpose back had an explosive 2018 season rushing for over 2,700 yards. It is tough for other tailbacks to try to compare to him, and college coaches know it.

There is game speed, breakaway speed, and Sevion Morrison speed on the gridiron. The Edison High School product posted a best 10.5 in the 100m sprint during his sophomore season, which makes his junior season stats come into focus. His sophomore campaign against 5A Oklahoma competition, by all accounts, was a good one carrying the rock 125 times for 1,021 yards with 11 scores going up on the board. Tailbacks dream of his junior season posting 2,761 yards with 34 touchdowns scored on the ground adding 205 in the passing game with two more trips into the end zone. He also took back two punts for 85 yards bumping his all-purpose yardage to 3,100 with 38 total scores.

After all the stats, as one might guess Morrison earned first team All-State honors with a truck load of offers following. To date, Morrison has 17 offers coming from Arkansas, Iowa State, Minnesota, Liberty, Kansas, Nebraska, Kansas State, Nevada, UCF, SMU, Memphis, Missouri Baylor, Washington, Utah, Mississippi State, and Georgia Tech. Visits have already been taken to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Arkansas with more on the schedule.

After showcasing his overall skills at the Under Armour All-American Camp on Sunday, I sat down with Morrison for an extensive interview covering everything to do with his game and recruiting process.

Interview

Sevion, you have elite speed that is deceptive. It is almost like you are toying with defenders at times who think they might have an angle on you. Do you play with the hopes of safeties thinking they might be able to catch you?

“Yeah. I stare at them when I run past them. I’m always running hard. It is an adrenaline rush.”

Just how fast are you?

“My fastest time is 10.5 in the 100 (meters). That was during my sophomore year.”

Wow. That is encroaching Olympic track speed.

“Thank you.”

You more than doubled your rushing yards from your sophomore to junior season. What was the biggest difference in your game allowing you to be more productive in 2018?

“I was hungry. I felt like I had a lot to prove. I felt like I should have done more my sophomore year. There are no handouts in football. I was hungry. I trained hard and worked hard to be prepared for the season. The whole summer trained for football.”

What type of offense do the Eagles run, and how does that offense fit your style of play?

“We run a lot of single-back sets, sometimes a two-back with an H-back for fullback. We run a lot of sweeps, inside and outside runs, counters – a little bit of everything. We matchup against the defense of the opponent. We do a lot of pulling.”

What does a 2,700-yard rusher with 34 rushing touchdowns work on in the offseason to get better?

“More explosion. That is what I am working on this offseason. I am running hills, working on my agility, and doing a lot of sprints. I am doing a lot of leg workouts and speed work. Don’t get me wrong, I work on everything including my hand-eye coordination. I was 185 pounds last season, I am now at 196 pounds.”

What goals have you set for your senior year?

“My No. 1 goal is to take state.”

Have you attended any national camps yet?

“Yes. I just attended my first one on Sunday. The Under Armour All-American Camp in Dallas.”

How did the camp go?

“It went really well. I liked it.”

What were you able to showcase against some of the best in the region?

“I ran routes well. They did not think I was an all-purpose back, but I showed everyone that I am. I had a couple of TDs. I dominated out there.”

Are there any other national camps you may attending coming up?

“Yes. I am going to the Nike Opening and Adidas Three-Stripe camps.”

I know a lot of college football programs are after you, how many offers do you have now?

“I have 17 offers.”

Are there any schools showing interest but have not offered?

“Texas Tech.”

Have you visited any schools yet?

“Yes. I have been to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma State.”

How did the Oklahoma visit go?

“It went really well.”

And what about Arkansas, how did that go?

“That went pretty well. I think it will go even better when I go back on March 9.”

What will make it better the second time around?

“I get to dress out in the uniform like a player. It will give me a chance to get closer with the staff, they are already almost like family.”

What about the Texas visit, how did that go?

“It was cool. They have very nice facilities. I had a meeting with Tom Herman (head coach). He is a cool dude.”

Do you have any other planned visits besides heading to Fayetteville?

“Yes, sir. I am planning on visiting Baylor and I want to get to Missouri.”

What are college coaches telling you they like about your talents?

“They like my speed and how aggressive I run. Some coaches tell me I remind them of Adrian Peterson. They like the way, like AP, I can go through a defender, juke them, or stiff-arm them to get my yards. Mostly they talk about my speed honestly.”

I believe it. Just to make sure, which position are teams recruiting you to play?

“Running back. All of them are recruiting me at running back.”

I had hoped so, but you never know when a coach will come out of nowhere and say I see this guy as a safety or something like that.

(Laughs) “I know what you mean.”

Sevion, it was great learning more about you and your game on the field today. I appreciate your time and wish you luck at the upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
